She frowns, her eyes glazed for a few seconds. “Why don’t you play it by ear? See if anything happens by Friday, then decide.”

“Maybe.”

“Are you going to be okay?” Lillian asks softly, dabbing at my smudged mascara with a tissue. “Why don’t you take off, go spoil yourself, and I’ll handle your appointments today.”

“I’m okay,” I say with a reassuring smile. “Keeping busy is good. It keeps my mind off of everything. Oh, which reminds me. Remember Lucy? ”

“Oh, yes. Her wedding dress was so dreamy, definitely one of your better designs.”

“Yes, well, her aunt seemed to think so as well. She owns a couple of boutiques in Los Angeles that ‘cater to the stars’,” I say, using air quotes to reference her words. “She seems to think our work will be a hit with all the celebrities out there.”

“Shut up,” she says, falling back in her chair, her mouth hanging open. “You’re being serious?” At my nod, her eyes widen as well.

“As serious as ticks on a stray dog during summer.”

“But that’s like over 2,000 miles away.” She sputters.

“I know,” I sigh. “That’s why I haven’t called her back yet. She wants to set up a meeting with both of us. I think she’s serious. She’s willing to fly out to meet with us.”

“You better call her. Can you imagine reading our names in the tabloids linked to some of the biggest stars?”

I bite back the smile that’s threatening at the dreamy look on her face.

“Hold your horses, batman. Like you said, it’s over 2,000 miles away, and our lives are here.”

“That won’t be a problem. I’ll offer myself as a sacrifice and move. It will be hard and I’m sure I’ll struggle desperately adjusting and everything, but it’s for the greater good, right?” Despite her cheeky smile, my heart freefalls. I can’t lose my sister.
