“Why is it that we haven’t been encouraged to use Phyx, Juniper, or Axel?” I inquired. “Earlier I tried to even summon Eira but it was impossible until the last minute.”

“Xenon explained Amaya sent out a blast that would stop everyone from using their unique capabilities. I guess it was her last attempt to try to render Zed useless but it didn’t do much,” he explained. “I did ask Nyx when she helped to put the markings on us. She said this final journey is meant for you and me. We need to do it without the aid of our wolves or gods and goddesses. This is the ultimate path necessary for us to embrace our survival as shifters, so I guess there’s a rooted meaning to it. It’ll end and we’ll be able to get back to using our capabilities to our fullest, but I think it has something to do with sealing Zed in the end. I can’t figure it out.”

“Intriguing,” I voiced. “Well, we’re just going to sit here and wait.”

“Essentially.”

“Are Mercury and Kenzo okay?”

“Thanks to you, yes,” he assured me.

“Azu?”

“There were a few tsunamis, but he was tamed and didn’t trigger a shifter war.”

“Thank goodness,” I sighed. “Tobias?”

“Handling it the best he can,” Asher assured me with a sad expression. “He didn’t expect to be the only good one in his family.”

“It has to be hard to realize your family betrayed you for power,” I muttered. “Anything to be at the top.”

“Essentia—”

We flinched at the loud sound of clashing. We looked to the left to see a massive sword attempting to break the bubble of protection.

What was uncalled for was the immense rage that consumed Zed’s face as he kept smashing the bubble, again and again. It was nothing like the composed man I confronted weeks earlier who thought he’d won when I remembered that he killed my father, but I couldn’t figure out where this rage came from.

“Why is he so angry?” I whispered, surprised this bubble was even holding up at this point.

“We’re about to find out.”

All I had to do was follow Asher’s gaze, and there was Father. He stood there so calmly, mere feet from us.

Zed paused in his manic attack to slowly glare at the man in question, his body quaking with rage as his magic pulsed and sparked around his limbs.

“You planned this all along, didn’t you?” he screamed. “This was your end game. To mock me in a way you knew would hurt!”

“Prepare to focus, Selene,” Asher warned as he knelt down behind me and put his hands on my shoulders. “You can only do this once.”

“Got it.” I wasn’t sure if things would be the same as how it was when I lifted the souls to Paradise, but I was ready to submit myself to the Celestial energy and let it do what my intentions were.

“I didn’t plan anything, Zed.”

“LIAR!” His scream sent shockwaves of power across the oasis of grass, but Father didn’t budge as he simply watched the man.

Watched him with eyes of pity.

“I was destined to be the ruler of the Shadow Realm! Destined to have children who will sit upon the throne and rule these realms and the people that were within its shadowed walls. You stole my destiny, starting with getting my wife killed!”

“You pass blame, Zed, when you’re the one who instigated all of this,” Father whispered.

“Me? HAH! I was but your tool! You and your kind-heartedness sought to revive the Shadowborns to simply give them a new chance at life? To deliver a world so they can have peace? You think we believed such LIES?! Now you stand here and wish for me to believe you didn’t plot for YOUR daughter to be pregnant with a Howling Heir?!”

That surprised Father, and his eyes actually widened. They slowly moved until they landed on me.

One look and he knew.

And he smiled with so much hope, it only motivated me to want to accomplish what would finally end this cycle of hunting our kind
