Her Shadowborn family.

“Let us return, my love,” I whispered.

This was the true beginning of our rise.

CHAPTER1

I Trust In You

~SELENE~

“You…”

I scrambled for words, my mind abuzz with various emotions while I drowned in a sea of questions.

Despite it all, I’d never felt so happy in my life.

And dizzy.

Asher didn’t delay in securing his arms around me so I wouldn’t completely drop to the floor. He clearly didn’t mind my moment of weakness as he knelt down and held me against him — my arms wrapping around his neck so I could hug him just as tightly as he embraced me.

Nothing could describe this moment. No words or gestures. I just needed to dwell in the vortex of happiness, sadness, and gratefulness I carried for this man who held me like I was his everything.

To him, I was his everything, and now I was worthy of being his fiancé.

Pressing into his shoulder, I didn’t stop myself from crying. I let it all out and he ended up sitting back and pulling me into his lap so I could allow my emotions to be free. I wondered if he truly understood the gift he’d just given me.

He realized this was something I’d never in my life be able to imagine would come to life and be my new reality.

My father is alive? No…my entire pack of Midnight Frost is alive!

A part of me wanted to believe it was impossible because how could they all perish fifteen years ago, only to be alive elsewhere? Did Diana know? The twins? What if Guardian knew?

I hadn’t even checked on my wolves, especially Pyrrhus, but maybe that was because this was my moment to feel and embrace the unexpected blessing hidden in the depths of the shadows.

All because I’d given my mate one chance to prove to me why he wasn’t a traitor for mingling with my enemy.

Pulling back to stare up into his softened eyes, I only shed more tears as I tried to speak — to say something that could express my immense gratitude to him.

My Alpha. My mentor. My destined mate. My fiancé.

“It’s okay,” he whispered and leaned down to kiss me tenderly. “You don’t need to speak now. I feel you. I understand and accept your immense gratitude, Selene.”

He kissed me again and then kissed my forehead before hugging me once more, allowing me to cry until I finally felt like I couldn’t shed one more tear. With a few deep breaths, I enjoyed his myrrh scent and the immense warmth his hold offered me for a few seconds.

Then it was time to get back to my badass self.

All I had to do was pullback and stare into Asher’s eyes to make him grin with pride as he understood my newfound conviction.

“Ready to head to the East?” he offered.

“Yes,” I boldly stated and then quietly whispered, “I trust you, Alpha.”

That seemed to give him some sort of reassurance as he leaned in to kiss me softly.

“I apologize,” he whispered against my lips. “Keeping such truth from you was probably the hardest thing for me to do accomplish. I need you to understand that it wasn’t because I didn’t trust you’d keep such classified information to yourself, but because of the vow I swore to keep.”

He took a second to swallow what was forming in his throat while he blinked his eyes.
