Deep within I’d always known a time would come when I’d have no choice but to rise into the role of High Council Member, but these circumstances couldn’t be predicted.

At first, it was devasting to me, but I also understood my role was simply that. Moving upward and leaving behind being an Alpha of North Syndicate didn’t strip my identity away.

I would still be an Alpha elsewhere.

We walked over to Ruby, my pride possession of a motorcycle, before I let go of her hand so I could inspect and ensure she was good to go.

“Ruby, activate,” I instructed, and watched her dashboard light up. “Stay on standby. Secure a route to East Syndicate and notify Alpha Azu of our approaching departure.”

“Welcome, Alpha Asher. Securing route to East Syndicate. Notification of approaching departure has been sent to Alpha Azu of East Syndicate. Will remain on standby.”

“Activate the basement’s security ,” I ordered. I needed this function to work as perfectly as it always did because no way could I let what would happen next be sensed by those begging to destroy us before we had a fighting chance of leaving here.

“Which code, Alpha Asher?”

“Code Shadow.”

“Understood. Initiating security process Code Shadow. Be advised, this space is now sound, bomb, and floodproof. Any outside bystanders will be unable to sense an internal shift of temperature or magical radiation.”

That alleviated a bit of tension within me as the walls began to shift, layered with protection in physical and magical form.

I used the opportunity to walk over to the counter and retrieve our helmets, before glancing back to offer Selene hers.

She simply stood there, staring at me like I was stupid to think she’d just sit on my bike and ride into the sunset with so much fucking tension pulsing between us.

It was enough that it was honestly hard to breathe, and I knew we wouldn’t be able to reach East Syndicate without tackling this once and for all.

I wouldn’t be able to face what was ahead without being confident, and that meant I had to have the support of my mate by my side.

It was funny how a few short months ago we were but strangers, and now I relied on this woman to push me into the next stages of our lives or else I’d fail before I reached our destination.

“Selene.” My voice was so damn vulnerable as I pleaded with my eyes that bored into hers. I knew she could feel the agony this was causing to me, but I couldn’t be an open book when she thought I’d betray her.

I’d never do such a thing.

Her emotions and actions were valid, but I just needed her to listen to me. To let those feelings of rage out so she could appreciate what I really wanted to share.

“Talk to me.”

She didn’t say a word, only approached — step by step — until she stood before me. It took everything in me to stand my ground. To not reach out and touch her, hold her, fill the growing void of misconception swallowing her from the inside.

I could see the true depth of darkness in her eyes. Those spheres began to question if I even deserved to be in her presence.

To even have a beating heart.

My analysis was far too close to the truth for her thoughts echoed in my mind with a heavy eeriness.

“Could I possibly kill Asher? My mate… my Alpha… my future…”

That should have pushed me to get out of here alone, and yet all I could do was sigh because I knew how heavy it was to carry any patience when in the presence of someone who associated with your parent’s killer.

Placing the helmet back on the counter, I turned to face her.

“If you want to kill me, this is your chance,” I announced. I wouldn’t fight against fate. If my path was to end here at the hands of my mate, I’d accept it as my destiny and beg Mother Moon every day to forgive my mate so she’d come to paradise with me.

The idea of us being separated by death made my stomach flip and my heart beat wildly in fear, but if this would give Selene some sort of closure, so be it.

One day she’d find out the truth, and hopefully, time would rid her of whatever guilt would be ignited by my death.
