“If a war comes to our doorstep, I’m not worried,” he confessed. “We’re of the darkness, Sweet Lex. Darkness is everlasting. Every other element can disappear from existence, and guess what? Darkness will remain. Upon these lands, above in the depths of the sky, in the galaxy, darkness reigns, which means demons, especially our kind that were blessed with the shadows themselves, won’t die as easily as the rest of the world thinks.”

“So… we really are immortal.”

“We can experience death like anyone else, but like in the valley, you and I will respawn. Anyone we bestow the ability upon outside the valley will also respawn. We’ll unalive ourselves and just pop back to life. That’s what makes us generally scary and not a shifter race to play around with. The closest shifter race you can compare us to is Dark Fae. They’re of similar qualities only their magic is far more powerful than ours.”

“Intriguing,” I whispered. “I feel like I don’t know anything even though I’ve tried to grasp all the knowledge available to me.”

“Father never updates the books on the pack grounds for a reason,” Malifer emphasized with a deep frown. “Knowledge to him is but a waste of time. The few updated books in his catalog were chosen by me when I was still his ‘alive’ son. I assumed his disinterest in keeping up with the times was an Alpha thing, but it's becoming clearer that he never sought for us to gain more knowledge.”

“Because knowledge is another form of power and he wouldn’t want to empower anyone unless he knows it’ll pay off,” I finished for him.

“Exactly.”

“There’s one more thing that concerns me.” The thought suddenly popped up. “Are our respawn abilities the reason why Laura seems so confident in betraying you?”

He didn’t answer, but I continued to stand in my place and peered up into his eyes which looked deep in thought as specks of gold flickered through his hazelnut orbs.

“Laura can’t respawn here.”

“Huh?” I didn’t understand.

“Like I said before, our respawn abilities are gifted. You and I carry such automatically because we carry half of the valley’s power. Only we can bestow respawn abilities to chosen demons within our pack, and even then, you have to be very specific with your execution of the spell. Since the pack carries ranks, I can offer the respawn ability to those who reach a rank like Beta Commander.”

“Or Luna,” I quietly hummed, which actually made him smile just slightly.

“Or Luna,” he repeated. “The only other way is to infuse it into an item of significance that’s made with your own shadowed magic. Like how you suddenly created that gun when you were jealous.”

“Wait. That wasn’t yours?” I offered with a nervous grin.

“No.”

“Oh…” My lips were left in an “O” shape before I shrugged. “No regrets.”

He shook his head. “You’re frightening at times.”

“I should be frightening all the time,” I noted and gave him a menacing look. “You should fear my wrath.”

“I only fear that mouth of yours.”

“What does that mean?” I questioned with a pout.

“I can never expect what’s going to come out of it. Nor what you’ll do with it to try to torture me. Therefore, it's fearsome,” he summed up like some sort of scientific fact. “Especially when you don’t listen to orders.”

“Whatever,” I huffed. “My disobedience turns you on.”

“Ya right,” he tossed back, and we began a glaring fit in the fucking alleyway.

“I bet you wouldn’t say shit about my mouth if your cock was in it,” I teased like I’d already won this brewing argument.

He opened his mouth but no words came out as he processed my words.

“See?” I purred with a saucy wink. “This mouth of mine got benefits.”

Externally, he was fuming, but my connection to him told a whole other story—the thoughts of my mouth actually around his thickness were going to make it even more difficult for us to get our asses inside for this deal.

Wouldn’t want him waltzing in with a very noticeable bulge in his pants.

“Do demons always get sidetracked when it comes to doing shit?”
