I never really thought about what would happen after that. When I reached the finish line of this prolonged journey of protecting my fated mate, what happened next? At some point, I thought there would be some grand ending like in those shows and fairy tales. A big battle, the real enemy plagued with death, and we’d all live happily ever after.

That shit doesn’t happen in real life though.

I guessed no matter where I’d thought this path would lead me, I never expected to see Malifer lean before me and apologize.

Then hold me as I sobbed and allowed myself to rely on someone other than myself.

How heavy it was to carry that weight through my life while continuing this facade of innocence. ]Its end was about to trigger new beginnings, which was why I was so nervous.

You can’t control something that’s new without a plan.

That was the problem. I didn’t have a plan. Aside from finding my sister, learning more about the Monarch Empire, and putting the pieces of my past together so I could determine exactly why I was a grand prize Alpha Shade was desperate to claim, there wasn’t a blueprint formulating in my mind to help me get to A, B, and C.

Which left me in a bundle of anxiety and irritation.

And the fact that I couldn’t remember the last time I’d been outside the lands of Shade Moon Pack only further frightened me.

This was the first time I was entering a vast world that didn’t revolve around the same forest, buildings, and technology. I only knew about certain cars because of Alpha Shade’s fascination with them. During those day hours of where he acted like a noble Alpha of the pack, he’d enjoy discussing the latest car shows and his hopes of investing in those cars.

As if he didn’t have all of them in his “secret base” of gadgets and weapons.

Being introduced back to society would be a step I wasn’t prepared for. Sure, whenever I’d gotten a chance in my Astra persona, I could watch a show or two before needing to aid someone in the pack with healing thanks to daily brawls and training, so I wasn’t completely oblivious to the tall buildings and lifestyle of humans and shifters.

However, I wondered just how much things had changed, especially when the last time I’d gotten a glimpse of the city life was when I was a child.

Before I was separated from my family, taken to that scary place, and then woke up to a young Malifer pulling me out of the debris of those mines.

The ring of a phone caught my attention, but my eyes remained glued to the scenery while I listened to Malifer as he picked up the phone.

“Malifer speaking.” His voice was emotionless once more which took me an added second to adjust to. “Yup. Clear it out. I don’t care about the price. Tell the manager to either take what’s given to him or enjoy being riddled with a bunch of stray bullets.”

That made me smile.

“Secure the area. I know we most likely won’t be able to catch Baker or his client, but Goldibitch isn’t getting off the hook.” He paused before he tsked. “Goldibitch is Laura, fool. Learn your fucking terms.”

Now I was grinning like a fucking fool.

I side-glanced over to him to meet those sinister eyes of his that looked less frightening now that they were hazelnut in color. He actually looked normal in his branded attire of black. It was a classy look with the rolled-up black sleeves of his dress shirt which only confirmed shit was going to get ugly.

I wondered if he had a gun on him just so he could act all criminal and shit, which left me wondering if I could steal it from him.

Steal Alpha’s gun. Wouldn’t it be hot to see him get into a brawl because his sweet mate stole his gun for fun?

“You seem to forget that he can read your mind.”Lily’s voice drifted in which made me mentally squeal.

Lily!

“Your hyperness confirms you’ve told him of our true intentions, hmm?”

Is it that obvious?

“Yes,”she replied.“Though Xiao being on her back and happily panting also led me to such a conclusion.”

I hadn’t even noticed my wolf and her happy antics. She indeed was on her back and panting happily. After so many years of acting like a submissive wolf, I bet she was on cloud fucking nine because we were free to be our true selves. Bonus points that our fated bond mark was fixed and felt even stronger than before, which put us in a really good mood.

I returned my attention to Malifer. He was still on the phone as if the person on the other side was yapping their life away. I guessed it was better than us potentially arguing thanks to my need to distract myself, but the drawn out silence and quiet speaking noises from the other side simply encouraged me to investigate where this gun was.

I wasn’t wearing a seatbelt so it was easy to initiate my thoughts in one graceful move. Malifer was going to say something—whether it was to me or the person on the other end of the phone, I wasn’t sure—but he stalled and watched me move until I was sitting right on his lap, my face inches from his.
