“I still don’t regret it.”

“But…” I pushed to hear how she truly felt because I knew there was more.

So much more.

“But…” She trailed off, gathering the courage to look back into my eyes.

Allowed herself this one moment to let her eyes fill with tears and allow those layers of protection to crumble in this single moment.

“Would have been nice to have a mini Malifer… or a mini me even. All mischief… and chaos. Felix and Fynn would make sure they didn’t destroy the valley. Wallas and Gaia would be nice teachers. Momo, Zasper, and the fleet would be extra supportive and play with them all day. Hah… This probably sounds stupid, don’t you think?”

Her tears fell then and her smile broke my fucking heart.

“That’s what I dreamed about. A short, sweet dream.”

The words left me without a second thought about anything else.

“Forgive me, Lexianne.”

I bowed my head until my lips pressed against the back of her hand, and she quietly chuckled.

“Silly,” she muttered. “Didn’t I say I forgave you?”

“You forgave Nathan.”

“You’re the same person,” she reminded me as if it went over my head.

“Doesn’t mean my mistakes and blind-sightedness are the same as Nathan’s.”

We shared a look before she slowly nodded in understanding.

“Then I forgive you, Alpha Malifer Nightshade.”

“Malifer,” I corrected. “Just Malifer, Lex.”

“Lex,” she huffed the shortened version but looked pleased with the name I’d clearly be sticking to calling her by. “It’s weird to admit I kinda liked when we were enemies.”

“Doesn’t mean we have to get along all the time,” I confessed, and that made her laugh.

“Meaning I can grind your gears as much as my Astra did. Excellent,” she hummed even as more tears escaped her eyes. “Don’t complain when you get tired of my bullshit.”

“Nah, I will complain.” I wasn’t going to lie about that. “I’ll just punish you for your bullshit.”

“That’s kinda hot,” she confessed and tried to laugh, but it came out as a sob. She used her free hand to press against her eyes as if to mask her immense sadness that begged to come to the surface and be freed after all the turmoil she’d been through.

I let go of her hand to rise up from my kneeling position before wrapping my arms around her.

“Let it all out, Sweet Lex,” I encouraged. “You don’t need to walk this villainous path alone anymore.”

“Good.” She tried to respond in a perky way but more sobs escaped her as she quietly admitted, “I won’t lie… It was lonely. So… so… lonely.”

Her admission was what I needed to bury my self-ridicules. At the end of the day, Lex didn’t give a shit about my flaws. All that mattered was having someone on her side after a strenuous journey alone carrying the burdens of the world around her.

My sweet mate. I’m sorry.

Nathan was right. This was our time to give her what she craved the most: stability, routine, a place of acceptance, and a role of worthiness that would further strengthen her.

We’d experienced our moments of being enemies, and such antics would only continue for the sake of obtaining revenge, but now it was time for me to prove to her that we could be more than that.
