“Check—check how?” snapped Wardell.

“Phone. Pocket,” she said simply.

“Tom—she has aphone! God dammit, I thought you were a pro!”

Tom considered silencing the screeching little nerd, but then exhaled slowly, and instead reached into a compartment in the body armor, removing the woman’s phone.

“212,” she said quietly. “Passcode. You can check if there’s backup coming.”

Tom frowned, hesitating. His finger hovered over the buttons. He didn’t press them, lowering the device slowly.

“I don’t think...” He began.

But Wardell wasn’t listening. He yelled, snatched the phone, dialed 2-1—

“Wait!” Tom cautioned.

2.

And the entire yacht shook. Tom shot a quick glance through the glass. A ball of fire was rising over the prow of the boat. He cursed and dove to the side at the same time as the woman went for Wardell’s gun, which he’d jammed right next to his junk, jutting out like an offered gift.

The man really was insufferable.

Tom hit the ground, firing off two rounds. One of them struck the woman in the arm—not a solid hit. But she was moving too. With Wardell’s gun, she fired rapid pace. All three of the guards with the big weapons didshit-all.Too damn slow.

But now, the other soldiers on the ship were clamoring to deal with the blaze. By the look of things, it was C4. By the feel of things—a sudden tilting—she’d blown a hole in the side of the yacht.

Definitely a SEAL. She fought like a SEAL and moved like a SEAL.

The only problem?

He hated the SEALS.

The woman had dropped behind the console, hiding now. Tom was on his feet, breathing heavily but retreating back to his own shelter.

Wardell, meanwhile, hadn’t even realized what had happened. “Tom!” he was screaming. “You idiot! Tom—what did you do?”

Tom sighed, stood, and shot the man twice in the head.

A flicker in his eyes—and then it died.

So did he.

Wardell tumbled to the ground, collapsing in that stupid, inflated white outfit of his. Dead. Dead. Tom felt a flicker of relief. He supposed he’d never been much of a company man. The SEALs. The lieutenant. Now Wardell...

“Hey!” The voice was shouting from behind the console. “You better get out of here. The whole thing is going to sink.”

He didn’t reply. She was trying to fish for his location.

He moved along the other side of the console, hoping to get the drop on her by sneaking behind. But then he heard footsteps. She’d detected his plan. He frowned, paused, back to the metal console, gun tight in his hand, breathing slowly as he considered his next move.

She was right. The ship was sinking.

On the other hand...

The SEALs had takensodamn much.

It was about time he returned the favor.
