"You are going to be punished. One means all," he threatened.

The obedience of this group was absolutely critical. He could not afford to have any insurrections breaking out. It would destroy everything he'd worked so hard for. Didn't these women realize how lucky, how fortunate they were to have been chosen as survivors?

A dark fury surged inside him again, and along with it came an idea.

Quickly, he dragged the latest asset into the communal hold. He wasn't putting anyone else in solitary until he'd figured out what had happened and made certain that it was secure.

But it wasn't enough to give them a physical barrier. That was the idea he'd just had.

He needed to set an example in their minds, one that they would remember. But the problem was that every woman he had inside there represented a crucial part of his new world order that would survive the upcoming disaster.

It would not help him to destroy the assets he needed by killing them too soon. Already, he'd lost one—a vital one that was not easily replaced.

He'd thought he had everyone on his list. He'd thought his mission was done, completed.

But he could always go and find one more.

A smile spread over his face as he started to appreciate the logic of his own thinking. The perfect logic. A circle completed.

He slammed the door and made sure it was firmly locked from the outside. There'd be no food or water for them in there. Not until tomorrow night at the earliest. The days of spoiling them, treating them well, were over. The last incident had ensured that.

But there was going to be a way he could make sure about their obedience, and the more he thought about it, the more he liked it.

He could go out and get one more asset. Her skills wouldn't matter. She didn't need to be handpicked like the others.

Because she would be used for one reason and one alone. She would be the sacrifice.

He would kill her in front of the others, brutally, to show that he could. To put real fear into them. He wouldn't have any problems after that. Not when they saw what he could do.

And it would satisfy his inner bloodlust too. It was the perfect solution.

Smiling to himself, he headed into his quarters.

He would rest now. It had been a long day. And they needed to sweat for a while, to stew in their fear. Then, after they'd waited long enough, he would present their punishment.

Tomorrow morning, he would go out on the hunt again.

And this time, the hunt would be followed by a kill.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

As May left the Haven's homestead, she got a call from the hospital. Quickly, she grabbed it up, feeling anxious about any news on Chloe. What if she'd taken a turn for the worse? She didn't know how much damage or injury she'd suffered during her ordeal.

"Hello? Deputy Moore? It's Doctor Prince here."

"Good evening, Doc," May said, glancing quickly at Owen, who looked as anxious as she felt.

"I wanted to confirm with you that the patient is safe. We've got one of your police on guard outside the door, and on his advice, we've put the entire hospital into a state of alertness. All visitors are being checked, and we've closed up the side entrances that staff normally use to get in and out."

"Thanks so much," May said, feeling relieved that all precautions were in place.

"We definitely do not want this patient to suffer any further trauma. She's been through enough. We will do our utmost to keep her safe here." The doctor paused, and May guessed he was weighing up what he could or couldn't say. After all, ethics and patient confidentiality came first.

"You could try to speak to her tomorrow morning," he said. "I know how urgent it is that you question her, but the problem is that I don’t yet know what her condition will be.”

“If we are able to speak to her, what time should we be there?” May asked.

“Her parents will be visiting during normal visiting hours, so I would suggest you get here earlier, at about six-thirty a.m. If her recovery continues well, then she should be able to speak to you for a short time. However, you must be prepared that she might only be ready for you the following day."
