“I’m sorry. I know I ignored you. It was awkward, huh?”

“Yeah. We were closer than that when you left. Just be natural.”

He saluted her. “Yes, Dr. of Love.”

Dropping his arm around her waist, he took her hand and shoved it into his warm pocket with his. “Let’s walk like this.”

She smiled and nodded. “Where should we go?”

“Anywhere. Do you have a favorite place on campus? Oh, wait—what is your favorite place to study? I’ve wanted to know since we all went to the grocery store.”

“A few. Should we go explore them?”

He nodded. “Let’s do it. I bet no one will be around.”

They spent the next hour roaming empty buildings, playing tag in the engineering building, writing love notes to each other on the whiteboards in the Family and Social Science Department when they found a room with a door ajar, and cuddling on the couches in the science building, the place she loved to study the most. They agreed it was to be the spot to meet to study together during the week, and then Holly remembered her pact to find a job.

Putting her head on his leg, she dug out her laptop from her backpack and searched the campus website for jobs while he ran his hands through her hair. There was a TA position in her department that she found right away.

Holly typed out her application, plugging in references and numbers she’d saved in her phone, and then submitted it.

“What are you working on so hard over there?”

“An application.”

He helped her sit up. “You want a job?”

“More like I need it. I’m saving for a car. Jack and Susan gave me some starter money, so I can get one a little more expensive that won’t die on me.”

“What job did you want?”

She shrugged. “Something that’ll get me through to the next semester. I always seem to run out of money a month before the semester ends.”

His hands froze, completely tangled in her hair. He pulled them out carefully and took both of her hands. “Is that why you didn’t buy a lot of food when we went to the store together?”

Heat filled her cheeks. “You noticed? Yeah, I was plum out of scholarship money. I’m not sure if I’ll get any during my internship, since it’ll be my off semester, so I’ll need to be careful with my money again.”

“I see.” He squeezed her hands and then went back to playing with her hair. “Well, I’m sure you’ll get the job.”

“I hope.”

Her phone buzzed with a call from an unknown number. “Hello?”

“Yes, Holly, this is Calvin Smith in the Family Life Department. I know you just filled your application out, but we’re desperate to fill the position before school starts. Can you meet me down at the Family Life Building, second floor in an hour? We’d love to interview you for the job.”

Holly sat up straighter and smiled so hard, her cheeks burned. “Absolutely. See you soon.”

“Who was it?” Eric asked as she started pulling on her coat and scarf.

“That job.... They moved so fast.”

“They want to interview you, right now?”

“Yes, right away.” She started walking toward the stairs and then realized Eric was still sitting on the couch.

“Right now?”

“Yes, in an hour, and I should probably get a shower and get dressed before I go.”
