A growl startled me to jump to the right.

Just as the shot rang out.

And a large silver wolf lunged from the bushes on the left.

Another growl and its lethal fangs clamped down on Tom’s arm. The gun dropped from his hand, and the wolf circled back around and attacked from the front, keeping between me and Tom.

The wolf’s lethal jaws clamped down on Tom’s throat. I heard a gurgling, muffling protests, until he went silent and entirely still.

“Bryant!” I cried out.

The wolf turned around to face me, and I saw the familiar blue eyes fix with mine. I started towards my wolf, my man(How did that happen? I didn’t care! I didn’t care! It was him!)...

...then halted when the wolf shifted back to human form, and an unfamiliar blond man stood and faced me.

“Are you hurt, ma’am?” he asked.

I blinked welling eyes.

Not my wolf then. Not Bryant. Just another shifter. Another wolf.

But a welcomed one.

“I-I’m all right. The other men, the Arcans...”

Another soldier in military camo dashed up and tossed my rescuer camo pants which he slipped on, unbothered by the fact that I had just witnessed him shifting.

“Got four of them two miles west,” the soldier said to his blond leader. “Hawkins took after a van of them racing down the highway. Miles and Jared are clearing their lair.”

The leader jutted his chin down at Tom’s body. “Take this one and stack it with the others for the cleanup team. Make it fast. I want us out of here in ten.”

“Yes, sir.” Then the soldier frowned at me as if just now noticing I was there. “What about this one?”

“Hey, bucko,” I grumbled back. “I’m not with those slimeballs. I was being held prisoner by them.”

The leader lifted his chin, studying me harder. “It seems you were. What’s your name, miss, and why were the Arcans holding you hostage?”

I shook my head. “Not. Telling.”

“Since I just saved your pretty neck five minutes ago, I will have answers.”

“You first. What’s your name, rank and serial number, soldier?”

I was going to ask how he came to be here in the middle of nowhere at the perfect time, then held my tongue. At least until I found out if these were the good guys, or just more enemies I needed to escape from.

The other soldier snickered, which he immediately bit down when the blond leader shot a daggered glare at him.

“Look, lady, I’m not...”

The leader’s words cut off when he grabbed up my hand and gaped at my signet ring.

“Where did you get this?” he demanded.

“Not—”

“Telling me,” he added for me. “You’d better, if you don’t want me to drag it out of you.”

“Look, I’ve just went a few rounds with those vile Arcan goons,” I countered. “You think your little threats bother me an iota? Besides, why do you care what jewelry I wear?”
