“Thanks, man. Appreciate that.” Houston turns his beer up then places the empty bottle down on the edge of the counter. “You here alone tonight?”

“Yeah, decided at the last minute to stop by on my way home.” Jameson catches Houston looking down at his left hand.

“It’s not often we get a night to ourselves. Finding a sitter last minute can be a little difficult. We hate to ask her parents, especially since they like to go to bed early.”

“I can imagine. I hadn’t planned on being out this late myself,” Jameson adds when he notices the time on his watch. “It’s been quite a day.”

“You need a lift? We don’t mind.” Houston asks.

“Nah, I’m good,” Jameson says then shifts his gaze to the end of the bar again.Damn it. Where the hell did they go?

“Well, take it easy. It was good seeing you again.” Houston reaches for his wife’s hand and laces his fingers through hers.

Ugh, so damn touchy-feely,Jameson thinks to himself.Give the damn woman some space.

“Same,” he murmurs then steps down from the bar stool. “Congrats again on the new baby.”

Reaching up to loosen his tie, he does a quick sweep of the place. Nothing. No sign of the two blondes anywhere.

“Ready for your check?” the bartender walks over, a couple empty beer bottles in his hands.

“Yeah, you can get it ready for me. The two women…uh, did they leave already?” he asks and pulls his wallet from his back pocket.

“I’m not sure. I was in the back loading up a few cases of beer. They did appreciate the drinks though. Said to tell you thank you.” The bartender reaches for Jameson’s card.

“I hate I missed them. They come here often?”

“First time I’ve seen them. At least during my shift. I’ll wait on them anytime they’d like to come back though. Don’t get beauties like them in here too often,” he says and taps the plastic card on the edge of the counter, a crooked smirk quickly appearing on his face.

“You can say that again. Hey, I’ll be right back.” Feeling a little lightheaded from not having eaten first, Jameson grabs onto the side of the counter while his vision adjusts to the dark corner where the bathrooms are located.

“No problem, man. I’ll leave your ticket up at the register.”

Stopping underneath one of the big screen televisions, Jameson looks up to see the sports highlights for the week. Though he’s never been much of team follower, it’s one thing for him to stay current on what’s happening since sports is a major topic of conversation with many of his clients. He can bull-shit his way through many things, but sports isn’t one of them.

As he’s reading the ticker running across the bottom of the screen, he takes a couple steps towards the opening for the restrooms. He doesn’t hear the footsteps until it’s too late.

“Oh, shit, my bad,” he says and reaches out to grab hold of the young woman’s arm—the same woman who was sitting at the end of the bar. Her tiny clutch slips from her hands and lands on the floor next to his feet.

“I’m so sorry,” she says, her voice almost as deliciously sweet as she looks.

“No, I’m the one who’s sorry. Forgive me for not paying attention,” he says and tilts his head to get a better look at her. “Let me get that for you.” This woman is every bit ten years younger than him but what he wouldn’t give for five minutes alone with her…in his bed.

When he stands back up again, there’s a moment of awkwardness between the two of them. As though maybe she senses what’s going through his head.

“Thank you, but I could’ve gotten it.”

“Next time, I’ll do a better job watching where I’m going,” Jameson says apologetically as he hands her the small purse.

“Next time?” the young woman repeats and raises her brow.

“Yes, you heard me correctly.” Jameson says, his voice low and gravelly. “Next time.”

Tucking her clutch under her arm, she turns on her heel and sashays towards the front of the bar.

Jameson watches the young woman stroll past the bar and right out the door. He reaches up and rubs his hand against his temple before shaking his head.

You dumb fuck! You let her walk away without so much as getting her name.
