My cheeks burned.

I squeezed my thighs together.

The sweet stickiness of the syrup was on my tongue.

His nostrils flared. His eyes darkened.

I sucked on his finger.

He seemed to realize all at once that this was not the time or the place. That me sucking on his finger brought back memories of me sucking on something else entirely…

I let out a sigh around his flesh.

He yanked his finger out of my mouth and stood up so fast that his stool wobbled precariously before righting itself. “Let’s hit the road.”

This was going to be a long drive.

Sera

“Did you see that?”I asked Hank, as I watched the door close behind Faith and MacKay. The baby shifted and I rubbed my belly absently.

“See what?”

“Faith and MacKay.”

Hank looked at me like the pregnancy had deprived me of oxygen. “Yes, I saw them. He picked her up, ate pancakes, and they left together.”

I rolled my eyes at my brother-in-law. Hank wasn’t exactly an emotionally deep guy and I wasn’t sure how much support he could provide if I went into premature labor while Cash was gone. All I was expecting from him was that he could drive me to the hospital if necessary. “No. I mean, did youseethem? I think there’s some kind of attraction going on between them.”

Hank was rinsing off his cutting board. He shrugged. “I didn’t see that. But I wasn’t looking for it either.”

“He stuck his finger in her mouth!”

“Huh. Okay, now that you mention it, that was weird.”

“What do you think about them as a couple?” I was totally intrigued by the idea. It hadn’t occurred to me before, but why not? They had similar dispositions and both enjoyed outdoor activities equally as much as a night out on the town.

“Faith just said she doesn’t want to date.”

“Everyonesaysthey don’t want to date and half of them do.”

“I’m the other half. I don’t want to date, I just want to fu—”

I instantly cut him off with my mom voice. “Stop talking! Now. I am not one of your brothers. Please don’t share any details about your salacious sex life. That’s way more than I ever need to know about my brother-in-law.”

Hank grinned. “I have some pretty good stories though.”

I borrowed a phrase from my fifteen-year old daughter. “Ew,” I said. “But seriously, I see a spark there.”

Hank shrugged. “Dumb idea to date your boss.”

“Also a bad idea to embarrass your sister in front of her boss,” I pointed out.

“What?” He did an admirable job of looking innocent.

“Telling MacKay she was Little Miss Crawfish? When she’s trying to be taken seriously? That’s why she was wearing that outfit, you know.”
