“Is that really a fair comparison? You didn’t lie in wait for MacKay naked.”

“No, but I was in a pond in my bra and underwear.” I groaned. The door jingled. A mother and her two small children entered the bakery. “I have to go. We have customers and I’m pretty sure the girl working with me is high.”

“Okay. I’ll talk to you later. Congrats on the job, Faith. That’s seriously awesome.” She blew me a kiss.

I hadn’t even gotten to tell her that I had to move to Kentucky for the new job, but that wasn’t weighing the heaviest on my mind.

It was the realization that I’d been selfish. I’d put MacKay in an awkward position with Cash. One that he’d never agreed to. Sure, I’d told him my first name, but I hadn’t declared in no uncertain terms that I was Cash’s younger sister. MacKay thought I was on the catering staff. That had seemed nothing more than an omission of the whole truth, but now I could see that it hadn’t been totally fair.

MacKay had known who I was later when he’d insisted on coming to my room and spent the night, so I guess I shouldn’t feel too guilty. It hadn’t stopped him from trying to slip a hand between my thighs when Cash had been pounding on the other side of my bedroom door.

The bottom line was I probably shouldn’t worry about MacKay’s choices. I needed to worry about mine.

This job needed to be a stepping stone to something bigger, in a location I preferred.

That meant I had to work harder to rein in the flirt than I had at the interview.

My shirts couldn’t have buttons that popped undone.

I need loose fitting sweaters or blazers that contained my curves under a swath of bland fabric.

My skirts couldn’t be tight. They needed to be flowing and long. To the ankle.

And no matter how much it was crushing my tits or tearing into my bare flesh, no matter how much I despised the damn thing, I had to leave my bra on.

At all times.

MacKay

I was going to kick Dylan’s ass.

“What do you mean, you went to Wanted last night? We were supposed to head there together today.” I was standing in the living room of our shared apartment, dressed casually in jeans and a T-shirt for the drive north and he was nowhere to be found. I had made coffee, knocked on his door, texted him, then finally called him when he didn’t respond. Now he was casually telling me he wasn’t in his room sleeping in or jerking around. He’d left the night before.

“I couldn’t sleep so I just decided to just go.”

“Without me.”

“Yes. I didn’t want to wake you up.”

“That’s so considerate of you.” I rolled my eyes. “You didn’t think to tell me? I’ve been sitting around the apartment waiting for you.”

“Sorry.”

I waited for more, but there was no further explanation or apology.

“I guess I should go then since I’ve already wasted forty minutes.”

“Sounds good. Don’t forget to pick up Faith.”

Wait a minute. “What? Why would I pick up Faith?”

“She doesn’t have a car. I offered her a ride to Wanted.”

Rubbing my forehead, I sighed. “You didn’t think to tell me that either?”

“It slipped my mind.”

“I bet it did.” Dylan had some kind of scheme going on. I just hadn’t figured it out yet. “Is there something you want to tell me?”
