“Or I could do Harry for short,” I say. “If you like that better.”

He rolls on top of me, capturing my wrists and pinning them to the bed above my head. “I like hearing my name on your lips. Harry can fuck right off.”

I grin and arch my back, pressing my breasts against his chest. “So, you’ll get mad if I call you Harry? Mad enough to bend me over and fuck me from behind while you tell me what a bad girl I am for making you get a hard-on during math class?”

He grins, one of his dazzling grins that would make the sun jealous if it could see his shining face. “Yes. Exactly. And I might have to spank you while I’m at it. You knew better than to wear that tiny skirt into class while I’m trying to teach the Pythagorean theorem.”

“The Pythagorean theorem is so hard,” I say, wiggling beneath him. “Nearly as hard as your cock, Professor Blackmore.”

We seamlessly transition into some kinky roleplay that ends with Edmond spanking me while I thrust back against his cock like a bona fide nymphomaniac.

And maybe I am, but only with him.

We stay in bed all night and deep into the next day, making love until I’m so sore I have to use the second poultice Herbish left for me before I head down to meet Amy and my sisters for dinner.

“But I’ll be good for one more round before you leave,” I whisper as Edmond walks me down the hall toward the smell of something delicious wafting from the dining room.

“Sadly, I have to go,” he says, his jaw tight as he adds, “Colin wants to speak with me before I leave for the patrol.” He lifts his hand, brushing his thumb gently over my bottom lip. “Be careful while I’m gone, and know I love you to distraction.”

“No distraction,” I say. “That’s not allowed while you’re patrolling the woods for bad guys.”

He nods but avoids my gaze. “Of course.” He kisses me one last time, a long, lingering kiss that feels like goodbye.

But as I watch him walk away, headed for Colin’s office, I tell myself that I’m being ridiculous.

He’s just going on a routine patrol, nothing super dangerous, and he’ll have other vampires with him to watch his back. He’ll be just fine and ready to yell at me come morning, once he realizes what I’ve done.

I head into dinner, determined to treasure every minute with my little girl and my family, just in case this is the last meal we ever share.

Because if anyone isn’t coming home tonight, it’s probably me.

Chapter Eighteen

EDMOND

Ihate lying to the people I love, but sadly, I’ve become bloody good at it.

I lied to keep Darcy and my other brothers from worrying about me—or pitying me—as I searched for a cure for my curse, then lied to them some more so they would never know the unbreakable burden I carried.

I lied to Casey the night we met to keep her from asking for more than I felt I could give, and I have lied to her a little every day I pretended I didn’t want to be in her bed more than I’ve ever wanted to be anywhere.

But this lie…

It hurts more than the others, and I know there’s a chance she won’t forgive me for it. If I die out there in the swamp tonight, she won’t care that I was part of a top-secret mission and sworn by my commander to secrecy.

She’ll just be pissed that I didn’t let her say goodbye.

And hurt. Devastated.

But she loves me as much as I love her, so maybe she’ll understand why I had to try to take out the Shadowbanes before they could invade Nightfall and put our family and little girl at risk.

And why I had to share my closest kept secret to make it happen…

“All right then we’re good to go,” Colin says, new respect in his expression now that he’s seen what I can do. The two men who served as my mind-control test subjects look a little less thrilled, but that’s understandable.

Playing puppet doesn’t feel good, even when you’ve consented to having someone’s hand shoved up your arse.

Colin motions toward the three men waiting by the door to his office. Two are familiar to me, but one I know must be from the outside. “You know Jamie, one of the wolf pack’s top trackers,” Colin says. “And Nadar one of our best former military men. And this is Ringer. He’s up from Salem to help out. He has experience fighting the Shadowbanes.”
