Birdie was my salvation…

As much as she was my weakness.

“Yo, Wilder, wait up.” Darius Hench jogged up beside me as I made my way to the locker room. “Can I talk to you for a second?”

“Sure, what’s up?”

“I was thinking of asking Cherri out, but I know you two are—”

“Firstly.” I held up my hand. “Me and Cherri aren’t anything, and secondly, you sure you want to go there?”

“Have you seen her? She’s… fuck, I get hard just thinking about her tight little body.”

“Too much information, dude.” I scowled at him.

“Shit, sorry. I guess it’s kind of weird, huh. You’ve banged her and now I want to bang her.”

“Have at it.” I shrugged. I honestly didn’t give a shit if he asked her out. It would hopefully keep her off my back. “Just don’t come crying to me when she breaks your heart in tiny little pieces.”

Darius grinned. “I know something she can break.” He cupped his junk and I shook my head with laughter.

“She’s all yours.”

I’d never wanted Cherri. She was a means to an end, and maybe that made me a cold bastard. But no girl—not Cherri or anyone else—would ever thaw the ice around my heart because no one would ever come close to Harleigh and the way she made me feel.

The way she’d always made me feel.

“Well, so long as you’re cool with it.” He nudged my shoulder. “You ready for Friday? I’m eager to kick some DA ass.”

“You know it.” I held out my fist and he bumped it.

We entered the locker room together and I joined Zane and Kye in our usual spot.

“Everything good there?” Zane asked, flicking his eyes to Darius.

“Yeah, Hench wanted to know if I minded him making a play for Cherri.”

Kye snickered. “Seriously?”

“Yup.” I pulled off my hoodie and t-shirt and started changing into my pants and jersey.

“What did you tell him?”

“To go for it. I don’t care who she does or doesn’t hook up with.”

“She won’t like it.”

“Not my problem.”

Zane scoffed. “You know her attempt at calling a truce was bullshit. If I were you, I’d watch your back.”

“Yeah.” I rubbed my jaw. “But she’s the least of my concerns right now.”

“Friday,” Zane said because he knew exactly where my head was at.

“I want Harleigh at the game but I need to know she’s protected.”

“I take it you have an idea about how to make that happen?”
