“Is that a promise?” she whispered.

“Fuck, you can’t say stuff like that to me.”

Harleigh leaned down, scraping her nails along my jaw, tracing the seam of my lips with her tongue. I gritted my teeth at her, nipping the end of her tongue and then sucking it into my mouth. I couldn’t get enough of her. My hands dropped down to her ass and started rocking her over me, back and forth, up and down.

“Does that feel good?”

She nodded, smothering a moan. “Touch me,” she whispered against my neck. “I want you to touch me.”

“One night,” I said. “That’s all this can be. Then things go back to how they’ve always been, Wren.”

She nodded, her eyes fluttering as I thrust up against her, our bodies moving as if they knew exactly what to do.

“I’m serious, B.” I gripped her chin again, pulling us eye to eye. “You’re my best friend. My fucking ride or die. I can’t lose you.”

“Stop,” she said, attempting to nuzzle my neck again. “Stop making everything so difficult. I want this, I want you.”

Fuck.

Those words shattered something inside me, so I kissed her again, harder, pushing my tongue into her mouth. One of my hands slipped between us and I found the bare skin of her stomach, walking my fingers down to the waistband of her skirt.

“Nix.” It was a breathy plea.

I watched her, soaking in every breath, sigh, every fucking thing as I dipped my fingers underneath her skirt and found her panties. “Fuck,” I hissed. “You’re soaked.”

“For you. Only ever for you.” She murmured the words as I stroked her over her panties. “More.” She arched into my hand.

“Greedy little thing.” I smirked, hooking two fingers inside her underwear and slowly sinking them into her tight wet heat.

“Oh God,” Harleigh cried, anchoring her arms over my shoulders.

“Okay?” I asked, and she nodded. “You’re so fucking tight, B.” My thumb circled her clit in lazy slow circles. “Never gonna forget this.”

I was entranced as I watched her fall. Bottling the sound of her breathy moans as she came around my fingers. She was perfect. So fucking perfect. And in a different time and place, she could have been mine.

But that wasn’t our destiny.

Birdie would escape this place one day. She would leave, and I would let her. Because The Row was toxic and that shit would eat at your soul until there was nothing good left.

“Thank you,” she smiled at me all dreamy-eyed and sated as she leaned in to kiss me.

Nothing had ever hurt me more than this moment. Knowing that’s all it could ever be.

So I held her. Held on tight and for a few seconds I let myself believe that this was the start of something special. Something real.

Something I knew I’d never get to experience again.
