I remember her glaring at me with fire at Debajo the moment she learned she’d signed herself away to me.

The triumph after she sent my best jacket to its waterlogged doom in the pool.

The way she felt in my arms the first night we came together.

When she agreed to spend her life with me.

Each step she takes brings her nearer to our future. A lifetime with her at my side. The world might let us down, but we’ll be steadfast in our commitment. Our love. Our faith.

Rae stops in front of me, and I take her hand. Her shoes are tall enough that her eyes are nearly level with mine. Those eyes are bright with warmth and nerves and anticipation.

My pulse thuds. “I like the dress.”

“Little place called Chanel.”

“Doesn’t ring a bell.”

Her lips curve.

This woman is my adventure and my home, my battlefield and my safe port.

“Is this what you hoped?” I nod to our surroundings.

“It’s perfect,” she whispers.

“The King is in the building!” the officiant declares from behind me.

“Three Kings actually,” my brother corrects.

Rae laughs.

“Soon to be four.” I trace the crown tattoo on the inside of her wrist.

I want this. Her. Us. The sanctity that is the union we’re about to create and swear ourselves to.

She inhales as if she’s thinking the same thing. “Are you ready?”

I take both of her hands. “For you? Never.”
