“No designer in town will want to do it when word gets out that they’re taking their life into their hands.”

Harrison frowns. “Of course they will. It needs only a few stitches, then it will be good as new.”

A low gurgling comes from the floor. I glance down to see Barney’s front paws braced on the hem of the dress.

“Barney, what are you…”

He barfs on the lace.

“There are easier ways to escape your own wedding,” Beck calls from the back seat of the Mercedes. “Unless there’s some other reason we’re driving through the desert?”

Raegan’s dress fitting might have made her faint, but it shook me, too.

Once you’ve been left by a woman who vowed to love you, a part of you is always waiting for it to happen again. In Eva’s case, it was best we broke things off. But the thought of losing Raegan is a fate worse than death.

“Do you want to call this off?”

The question hung between us until Barney hurled the contents of his stomach onto the gown.

I can’t fix the words we exchanged.

What I will do is find this ring if it kills me.

If I can recover it, I can fix whatever has gone wrong this week.

That’s why I demanded the jeweler tell me where the truck was last seen. She reluctantly gave me the coordinates—and only when I threatened to call the CEO and send helicopters out looking for the vehicle in the meantime.

In the back seat, Beck shows his phone to Tyler and makes him laugh.

“You’re missing out, Preppy,” Beck calls. “You won’t believe what this alligator does.” Beck grabs Sebastian's shoulder, shifting the phone through the gap between him and the passenger door. “This is in the wild, Dr. Dolittle. No cages, no tanks.”

I can’t tell if Sebastian is watching the screen or the man who, judging by how close he is, has never heard of personal space.

“That’s messed up.” There’s reluctant humor in my brother’s voice.

Beck drops back next to Tyler, laughing.

“When I’m out of here, I won’t have to see his smug face,” Sebastian rasps, rubbing his shoulder.

“You’ll miss his smug face.” I turn to stare at my brother. “When do you fly back?”

“Next week.”

“And he’s still on the team.”

I don’t have to say his name. We both know who I’m talking about.

Sebastian grips the dash with one hand. “He’s married, and we’re professionals, and it never happened.”

Of course it happened. Just because the months my brother spent with his teammate were a secret from the rest of the club, from the world, that doesn’t erase it. Particularly not for Sebastian, who’s brave and earnest and more romantic than he lets on.

“I’m sorry,” I say.

“I don’t care that it’s hard. I just don’t know why it’s so easy for everyone else.”
