In addition to the paper revisions, I’ve been figuring out how to land that interview. I’m sick of waitingaround.

For starters, I reviewed every appointment to top schools in the past three years. Parsed the profiles of each ofthem.

And though I think the associate dean’s argument’s is bullshit, I see what he’s saying. Most of the new hires are… well-rounded, for lack of a better word. I’ve never had much interest in raising my head from my work. I just want to be the best at what I do. But I’m putting together an opinion piece about healthcare policy, and I’ve assembled some other practical elements to forwardhim.

There’s no way I’m leaving this tochance.

As we take the elevator back up, Carly prods, “So, it was fun seeing you at drinks on Friday. We should do it againsometime.”

The doors open and we step out onto ourfloor.

I’m no social expert, but that’s a generous assessment of mycompany.

I’m pretty sure I managed empty greetings and two-word replies toeverything.

Because no conversation could make me forget where I’d come from, and no beer could make me stop tasting her on mytongue.

“I don’t think that’s a goodidea.”

Her face falls. “There’s someone else, isn’t there?” I curse in my head, but she just smiles. “Don’t feel bad. I’m glad there’s someone for you. I hope she knows how amazing youare.”

Back in my office, I open the email I’ve read half a dozen times thismorning.

Sent:Monday, 8:43a.m.

Wes,

I’msorry again for missing the meeting. Thanks for sending your recording of your conversation with thecouple.

Ihavesome ideas of what we could do. Take a look and let me know what youthink.

Rena

Meaningbetween the time I sent them yesterday and this morning, she’s already listened to the hour-long interview, made notes, and come up with someideas.

I click the file. She’s broken it down into talking points, a storyboard. It’s a scanned sheet of paper, not a computer file, which makes me wonder where she was when she came up withthis.

I’ve always thought of trying to sell the whole idea of DNA dating using data. But what she’s written is personal. “You’re tired of searching for love. It’s time for easy. Let science help it findyou.”

At the end are a bunch of bulleted quotes, including,“I never knew it was possible to feel this way aboutsomeone.”

In no universe had I planned on giving in to the deeply flawed impulse to comfort Rena with mytongue.

Because once I started, there was zero hope ofstopping.

I hadn’t counted on her breathy moans, the feel of her smooth thighs under my hands, or the way she’d nearly ripped the hair from my head when I found the rightspot.

I pull out myphone.

Wes:I like the storyboard. And thequotes.

It’s not a text—it’sa stone lobbed into a pool to see whathappens.

She responds secondslater.

Rena:I’mglad.

What does that even mean?
