"You have more than one life, micina."

"I've long since used up the nine lives of a cat, mafia prince. And that scares me a little. Even though I can't live without that feeling. It's the only thing that makes me feel alive." The words bubbled out of her and I could hardly process them all.

"Then I guess I'll have to give you a few more lives."

Gia snorted. "You are not God."

"No. There is no God. But if anyone comes close, I guess it's my family."

"Vincenzo's wife is dead."

"I am not saying that we are immortal and everything is in our hands."

Her gaze slid to me, cautious and inquiring. I kept mine on the road, but sensed the way she was looking at me.

"You're a fucking temptation, Dario. A sin. A fucking devilish man I just can't say no to, it seems." She sounded like that was what worried her the most– not all the rest of the problems that came with knowing me in person.

"Well, micina, I never claimed to be a saint. On the contrary. You knew from the very first time we met whose hands you were putting your life into."

"And I'm still not sure if it was stupid or the best thing that has happened to me so far."

"Considering you had a bomb strapped around your torso and we almost blew up, you shouldn't talk about it being a good thing that happened," I replied, an amused undertone in my voice. "At least, that's what my brothers would say. I don't think anyone can top that getting-to-know-you story."

Gia gave me another look that told me in an explicit manner how crazy I was. "I guess you could say that."

And that proved without a doubt that she could keep up well with me in this respect.

A little later,I stopped the car in the small driveway next to her front door and remembered the first time I had brought her here. That was only about a week ago, but it still felt like half an eternity.

Gia looked from the passenger seat in my direction, as if waiting for something. Finally, she said something. "I appreciate you giving me a ride."

"What you saw today wasn't anything yet. I wonder at what point it'll put you off this life."

"There was a bomb strapped around my torso. I think it's going to take a while," she said joking, shaking her head.

"I'll remind you of that once you react in shock to something."

"As long as you don't drag me somewhere where I have to see dead bodies or dying people " she replied, one eyebrow raised.

I shrugged my shoulders. It was part of my job, but I didn't expect her to expose herself to it. It was strange to think about it at all. After all, Gia was still a civilian and didn't have anything to do with the mafia.

The quiet decision, which had arisen in the back of my head, to let her in on some of our secrets little by little, somehow didn't make the whole affair any better.

It just meant that I wanted to share my life with someone who wasn't part of my family and expecting her to just get along. Gia might have a certain strength and a similar brand of messed up in the head, but that didn't mean that she belonged in my world and could cope there.

"That can be arranged," I replied, nodding my head toward the front door. "You should get some sleep."

"And you? Where will you wreak havoc next?"

"Probably with my brother. I think I should inform him that Moretti was trying to get information."

"You would have been better off taking one of your brothers with you, too," she said, looking thoughtful.

I shrugged my shoulders. "I'm thrilled with the outcome of the whole situation. Besides, Emilio has taken me away from matters concerning the mafia for the time being. Because of the thing with the bomb."

"So he's punishing you."
