“Are you going to get smug if I say it was?”

“Would it be unreasonable? I’ve never slept with a man before.”

Okay, he had me there. Even with what was probably a large amount of experience with women, he had taken to pleasuring another man with both enthusiasm and skill. I didn’t know how much those skills overlapped, but I had to admit he’d done a good job and was allowed to stroke his ego a bit.

He smirked. “Is this where you also tell me we always use condoms? This isn’t some form of commitment on our part, and…ah! I have to be sober.”

I rolled my eyes. “The first two were a given. But the last one…just don’t be wasted, alright?”

“I don’t drink to excess,” he said, closing his eyes again. “Now we have that settled, feel free to relax. This is because I happen to enjoy your company. You’re an interesting person, and not just because you are the first man I’ve ever found myself interested in. And with two times under our belts, I can quite easily say I enjoy sex with you.”

“Fine,” I said, holding up my hands. “We keep to the boundaries, and I’m not going to kick up a fuss.”

“Well, that was part of the fun, but I think having more access and enthusiasm from you will more than make up for it.”

“You really are a jackass.”

He smiled fondly, folding his hands over his stomach. “Now it’s officially a compliment coming from you.”

I sighed, turning to walk out before he could see my smile.

“Oh, and Kevin?”

I stopped, looking over my shoulder. “Yeah?”

“What are you doing for the holidays?”

“Uh, I don’t normally get them off if I’m in a long-term position or we’re backed up. So I’ll probably be working, and just video call my family,” I said. I needed to take some vacation time after I was done working for Sophia. I missed Diane and Tony.

“I see,” he said, opening an eye to wink at me.

Sensing the conversation was done, I left the room, leaving me to wonder just what I had gotten myself into.

CHAPTER EIGHT

Glancing over my shoulder, I watched the chef move about the kitchen as she worked tirelessly. The fragrant smells of herbs and meat managed to roll out even through the closed doors and windows. It didn’t smell like the Thanksgiving I was used to having when I’d been with any of my families, but it was close.

Hunkering down on the back porch steps, I opened my phone and dialed Diane. It rang a few times, but eventually, the screen went black, and then after a moment of shuffling noises, Diane’s face appeared on the screen.

“Oh, hello there. I was wondering if I would hear from you today,” she said, beaming.

“Of course you were,” I told her with a huff. “I’m sorry I couldn’t be there.”

“Don’t worry about it, sweetheart, I know you’re working, and Tony does too. What you do is important,” she assured me with a wave of her hand.

I heard a thump and clatter in the background. “Uh, what’s going on over there?”

Diane rolled her eyes. “Someone determined he was going to be the one to cook the turkey this year.”

My eyes widened. “You’re letting him near the stove?”

“Good Lord, no! I wouldn’t let that man anywhere near my stove. No, he’s decided he’s going to deep fry the thing, pray for our cholesterol levels, and he has some device that’s made just for doing that sort of thing.”

“Okay, him being around a vat of hot oil is not making me feel any better,” I said with a wince. “You remember what happened the last time he cooked?”

“Which is why he’s in the backyard, away from anything flammable,” she told me. “And he swore up and down that he watched several videos and wouldn’t send any of us to the hospital.”

“Yeah, that doesn’t make me feel better,” I told her with a shake of my head.
