“Do I need to tie you up?” he growls, leaning down to face me.

Just then, I hear the sound of the garage door coming to life. Blaze.

“Who is that?” David demands, kicking my thigh. When I don’t answer, he hauls me up and slaps me. “Answer me, my love. You’ll regret it if you don’t.”

The mudroom door squeaks open.

“Brooke?” Blaze’s voice carries through the hallway and kitchen.

“Of course it would be him,” David snaps. He pulls me toward the door that leads to the patio. But he’s not fast enough.

“Let her go,” Blaze says in an even, authoritative tone. He’s in the kitchen, stepping toward us cautiously, with a gun pointed just above my head.

David looks between us. He’s strong, but Blaze is bigger and intimidating—and trained. Without a second thought, David grabs a vase from one of the side tables. I try to dodge, but he still manages to crack it over my head before running outside.

My knees hit the ground. Somehow, I’m able to catch myself before I dive headfirst into the carpet.

“Daisy.” A familiar pair of arms wrap around me, pulling me up. Blaze half-helps, half-carries me to the couch, where he settles me in his lap. I try to protest, but the words don’t even make it to my mouth.

Tenderly touching my head, Blaze lets out a curse. “You’re bleeding, Brooke. God, how could he do this to you?”

His words blur together as my eyes slide closed, but I manage to mumble, “My fault.”

But all I can think about is the way Blaze is examining me, checking for further injuries. His hands burn against my skin.

Not Blaze. Anyone but Blaze.

“Daisy, stay with me. Keep your eyes open. Was David alone?”

I try to open my eyes, but the light hurts.

“Brooke. I need an answer.”

“Wh-what?”

“David. Was he here alone?”

I moan, bringing a hand to cover my eyes. “I... I think so. Blaze, the lights.”

Gently, he removes me from his lap, leaning me against the back of the couch. “Don’t move.” I hear him close and lock the patio door, and then the lights switch off except for the hallway’s.

As I lean into the cushions, I feel a small weight on my lap. Angel nudges my stomach with her head, causing me to wince. Blinking open my eyes, I scoop her into my arms. My stomach still hurts from David punching me. Hell, my whole body does. And my head. God, my head.

“Brooke, who’s your physician? I’ll get them over here to look at you.” Blaze kneels down in front of me. Even in the dark, I can see the worry on his features.

“Why you?” I whisper, hugging Angel closer to my chest. Just why? Why couldn’t it have been Dominic? Or Felix? Or Alex?

Letting out a grunt, Blaze pulls out his phone before holding it to his ear. “Alex. Call Brooke’s doctor, get them over here. David attacked her.”

The voice on the other end sounds upset, but I can’t make out any words.

“I think she’ll be fine. Maybe a couple scrapes and bruises, looks like a concussion. Just call her physician. I need to get Dominic over here to help secure the house.”

He hangs up and grazes his fingers against my cheek. “How are you feeling?”

I blink. “How am I feeling?”

“Yeah. Do you know where you are? Do you know who I am?”
