“You have a girlfriend, Blaze.”

He shrugs. “Not anymore. Broke up with her.”

“What? Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Well, I mean, it just happened.”

“Blaze, I’m sorry—”

“Don’t be.” He pulls me toward the gym and the sparkling lights inside. “You’re much better company.”

When the scene changes again, I’m surrounded by friends and family outside my parents’ house. My graduation party.

He’s there. He always is. With a grin, he pulls me off to the side of the house, behind a bush so no one can see us.

“Want your graduation present?”

“You didn’t have to get me anything, Blaze.”

“Oh, okay.” He shrugs. “I can keep it to myself then.”

“What? No!”

With a smirk, he turns me around so I’m facing away from him. Something shiny crosses my vision, and then something cold, metal, and small hits my chest.

Once he’s clasped the necklace behind my neck, I stare down at it. It’s a small daisy pendant.

“Blaze! It’s so pretty!”

“Matches your nails, too.” He points at my hands, where my fingernails are a light pink with tiny daisies painted on them.

“This is the best gift I could’ve asked for.”

He grins. “Well, I do know you best, don’t I?”

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

BLAZE

THE FIRST TIME I wake, it’s to her voice, barely a whisper.

“You’re my everything, too. Please wake up so I can tell you. I’m so sorry, Blaze.”

I want to reach for her, to open my eyes, to tell her I know. But I can’t. I’m not even sure if her voice is real, or if I’m dreaming.

I fade back into sleep, my dreams filled by a small, brown-haired woman with a soul-capturing smile. But she’s always just out of reach. Words float from her mouth, memories, and they fill me with a deep-seated terror that I’ll never be able to reach her.

I love you... but I need you to give me space.

I’m afraid I’m repeating the same pattern. That I’m throwing myself back into chaos. I’m terrified, Blaze.

What I didn’t get a chance to say was that she wasn’t throwing herself back into chaos, because I refuse to be that to her. But how do you prove that?

The second time I wake up, it’s to more voices, but these ones are much clearer.

“I don’t care if I have to drag you from here kicking and screaming, Brooke. You need to go home and get some actual sleep.”

“I’m not leaving him.”
