David chuckles, setting his book down and uncrossing his legs. He leans forward, and the predatory smile on his face sets off a groggy panic in my body. “You really thought I’d let you leave? You’re better off with me. I told you—Blaze is just using you to get information on me. You don’t think he actually loves you, do you?”

Despite the drug that obviously hasn’t worn off completely, I’m self-aware enough to know that I’m not thinking straight. That David is obviously lying. But it doesn’t stop the pain burning in my chest.

“I heard that he was treating you terribly, and then all of a sudden he did a one-eighty. Started treating you like a queen. You don’t find that a little odd?”

“Because he... cares.” There are so many things I want to say right now, but I can’t even find the right words, let alone get them to form on my lips. All I can manage is a weak, “Fuck you.”

And then David is crouching in front of me, his face so close I can feel his breath on my skin. “You will, don’t worry.”

His words send a spike of fear up my spine, and my stomach lurches. But my eyes are already closing, sleep causing me to black out again.

When I wake, Angel is nudging my face. I moan, clumsily pushing her away with my tied-up hands. This time, my mind is clearer. I bolt upright, closing my eyes against the way my head pounds.

It’s still dark out. And David isn’t in the room.

I stumble to my feet. I’m a little wobbly, but I don’t care. This is my chance to get out of here, and I’m not wasting it. I’ll have to leave Angel—she’ll just make noise and slow me down—but I can come back for her.

All it takes is a press of my thighs to know David found my gun and took it. I should’ve pulled it out when he left me alone. I should’ve shot him and ran.

Too late now. But I can still get the hell out of here.

I sprint through the house until I find a door. There’s no point looking for my keys. David hid them, and searching will just waste time.

After struggling with the lock, I hurl the door open and run. There’s a road down the driveway, but it’s too out in the open. So I dive into the woods at the side of the house.

No shoes. It hits me when something sharp digs into my foot. It stings, but I don’t care. I have to get away.

I make it a few yards in before I have to slow down. We’re far enough away from the city that there’s not much light pollution, and even so, the leaves from the trees would block it out anyway. I have to pick my way through the forest cautiously since I can’t see far. The last thing I need is to run headfirst into a tree.

Slowing down, as it turns out, was my mistake.

“You think you’re smart, don’t you?”

The words are a low growl in my ear before I’m tackled to the ground. I scream, but David just laughs.

“We’re miles away from any other houses, love. No one will hear you.” Then he hauls me up, dragging me back to the house by my hair.

I try to pull free, but he slams me against a tree and slaps me.

“Stop fighting, or you’ll regret it, my love.”

“Fuck you,” I grit out, and he slaps me again.

Shut up, Brooke. If he hurts you, you won’t be able to get away.

When we get back inside the house, he throws me into a bedroom on the first floor. Thankfully, it looks too small to be the master.

“Who were you going to go to? Hmm? Him? You ran from him, you stupid bitch. Left him. Twice. Do you really think Blaze will want you back now?”

David yanks a rope out of a dresser and ties it firmly to the bed. Then he shoves me onto it, securing the rope to the one binding my wrists. It’s a few feet—enough that I’ll be able to lie down, but not much more.

When he leans forward, his body unnervingly close to me, he grins. “Trust me. When I’m done with you, he’ll want nothing to do with you.”

I shake my head. The sedative he gave me is completely worn off now. His words mean nothing. “What you do to me won’t change how he feels about me one bit.”

He slaps me again, but I can’t find it in me to regret what I said. “You slept with him, didn’t you?”

I nod.
