I wonder what would happen if I say I don’t want to be with him.

“Earth to Sophia. You in there?” Brent waves his hand in front of my eyes.

“Sorry. I’ve just had a lot on my mind lately. Oh look, our food.” I lean back as a pretty blonde waitress slides my plate in front of me.

“Enjoy,” she says, smiling at us both.

When Brent winks at her, I throw out the entire idea of being with him. Why would he do that? Gross.

I keep the rest of our conversation as un-intimate as I possibly can, telling him about my day and asking him boring questions about his job. Soon enough, we’re getting back into his car.

Once we’re on our way, I shoot a text to the group chat with Rachel and Victoria. We always update each other on our whereabouts when we’re going on a date with a new guy.

“Texting your other boyfriend?” Brent says jokingly, but I catch a hint of jealousy.

“Oh, no, just a few friends. They’re curious about how the date went. I was just telling them to shut up.”

“So you told your friends about me.”

Fuck.

Brent takes it as a hint, and his hand slides onto my leg.

Fuck fuck fuck.

“I just told them I had a date,” I say lightly, trying not to squirm. Then I send another text.

Why is it that when Alexander touches me, it completely unravels me, but when Brent does it, I want to cut his hand off?

Thankfully, the rest of the drive is spent silently listening to the classical music coming from the radio. I wonder if he did that as a romantic touch, or if that’s what he listens to on the regular.

When he pulls up in front of my house, my heart practically stops.

Across the street is a sleek, gray car that’s all too familiar. And it’s empty.

“Well, thank you so much for dinner. The restaurant was beautiful.”

“Not as beautiful as you, Sophia.”

“Oh, I don’t know about that. But thanks.” I fumble with the car door.

“I’ll walk you to your house. It’s getting dark out, and this isn’t the best neighborhood.”

It’s as safe as anywhere else, you classist fuck.

Smiling, I keep as much distance as possible between us as we head up the sidewalk. When we hit the top of the porch steps, I reach into my purse for my keys.

Come on, guys.

“Listen, Sophia, tonight has been amazing.” Brent takes my hand, pulling me close to him. An arm wraps around my waist. “Your smile lights up my whole world.”

Gross.

Finally, the front door swings open. Light floods the porch as Victoria and Rachel run out.

“Hey beautiful!” Victoria says. “We’ve been waiting for you to get home.”

“Oh, hey there... Uh, which one is this, Soph?” Rachel frowns at Brent, even though she knows exactly who he is.
