Page 23 of Staying for Her

“I’m sure. Enjoy your friends and I’ll be home by six, maybe seven, so let me know if you want me to stop and get anything for dinner.”

I growl, not wanting her to go out of her way.

“Maybe I don’t need food for dinner, maybe I just need you,” I tease, my lips tracing down her neck and her breath catches and her fingers dig into my arms. “Hurry home, baby,” I mutter before taking her lips once more as I open the door, seeing the Uber waiting at the end of the driveway.

“I’ll see you later,” she says before running down and getting into the car.

Once she leaves and I close the door, I turn to go back into the kitchen but stop when I see all my friends standing behind me, smiling.

“You are in so much trouble,” Cash says through a knowing smirk.

I roll my eyes, shaking my head and I smack his arm, going into the living room and sitting on the couch.

“So you guys like her?” I ask, needing their approval since they’re the only real family I have anymore.

“We love her,” Addison states as Max finally comes back in and hands her Luna, who is now dressed in a onesie with flowers all over it.

Just as we all sit down to watch some mindless television for a bit before I head home, my phone rings. I take it out and see that it’s Harry, my lawyer and I excuse myself, hating the way my stomach sinks seeing his name.

“Hello?”

“Lucas?” he asks as I give a grunt in response. “I really am sorry to have to tell you this, but your mother has revoked your living inheritance.”

I stand there stock-still, his words refusing to penetrate because I couldn’t have heard him correctly.

“Lucas, are you still there?” he asks and I shake myself out of the fog I’m in and take a deep breath.

“I could have sworn you just told me that my mother revoked the money she promised me.” When I’m met with silence, my fist clenches around my phone, my other hand barely containing the restraint not to punch a wall. “How. How the fuck is that possible? Is she even allowed to do that?” I ask, not really understanding any of this, the shock pouring over me in waves.

“She is. Since she is alive and can change the terms of the contract, unfortunately, she has decided you are no longer eligible to receive the money.”

“Who got the money?” I growl, knowing exactly who got it but need to hear it from him.

“I can’t say, Lucas, you know that. Client-attorney privilege.”

I hang up the phone, throwing it across the room and watching as it shatters to pieces on the floor. Everything I’ve worked for, everything I’ve dreamed about is gone.

Billie

“You are an actual rock star, you know that?” I say to Harlow as she gets up off the ground and wipes the grass off her jeans, taking her son’s hand and helping him do the same.

This session has been incredible, not only because I’m taking pictures of one of the most notable models in the world but because this woman is probably the easiest person I have ever photographed and it doesn’t hurt that her son is the cutest thing I have ever seen.

“I wouldn’t say that, but thank you,” she says shyly, her eyes darting around as if waiting for someone to pop out of the shadows. “I’m just happy you had an opening, I’ve heard through the grapevine that you’re hard to book.”

I try to suppress the squeal that I want to let loose at those words, but I compose myself and just smile, shrugging as if it’s no big deal.

“Honestly, I think this time of year is always busy for any photographer. Weddings, graduations, and engagements always seem to fall in the spring and summer, but I was happy to squeeze you in. I actually had to bust out of a one-year-old’s birthday party to come here,” I joke, but when her eyes widen and the guilt washes over her, I wave my hands. “I honestly just lost track of time, I was meeting my…” I trail off.

Is Lucas my boyfriend? Or should I still call him my fiancé since that’s technically what we are until he gets the money?

“The guy I’m seeing took me to meet his friends for the first time, so time just got away from me.”

She nods, her eyes still lingering as if trying to decipher if I’m lying.

“So, how long are you in town for?” I ask, wondering if I’ll get to work with her again soon.

“Oh, I’m back for good. I’m done with the whole modeling thing. I tried it, made some money, and then decided it wasn’t for me anymore.”
