Page 9 of Hoping for Her

“Fine, you win,” she murmurs. “You were always too good at that.”

I chuckle, bracing myself for the information I’m about to get.

“His name is Brandon and he’s a senior at the college in town.”

Um, what?

“Senior in college?” I look at her with wide eyes. She can’t be serious. “Addi, you’re twenty-eight years old. How old is he?” The guilt emanating from her tells me enough.

“Twenty-two?” she admits, and I shake my head, a breath leaving my lungs because this is not a good fucking idea. “I already know what you’re going to say and at this point, I don’t care. I met him at a party, and we connected on a level that I’ve never experienced, okay? We just... work.”

God, even her reasoning makes me want to vomit. Who says, “connected on a level that I’ve never experienced?” I want to puke.

“You can’t be serious right now… he’s six years younger than you, Addi, that’s never going to work.” The angry flare in her eyes reminds me of Mom and I know I struck a chord.

“How do you know? You’ve never even met him!” she yells, getting up from the couch and heading back into the kitchen.

“Addi, come back and talk to me?” I ask softly, not wanting to ruin our night, but knowing I probably already did.

“If I come back in there, I’m not talking about Brandon… at all. And you have to tell me what’s going on between you and Kate.”

That sneaky bitch. She always knows how to get what she wants.

“Fine,” I mutter, hearing a squeak come from the other room and soon enough she’s coming back with another armload of snacks and plops herself down beside me.

“Spill it.”

How do I explain what happened between us when I don’t even know what happened? One minute I hated her guts and the next I couldn’t get the taste of her lips out of my head. Or the way her hips move when she walks, or the way her hair falls into her face.

“I don’t know.”

Addison gives me a look and I hold up my hands.

“I swear I don’t know what’s happening. I thought I hated her, I wanted to keep hating her but…”

Addison smiles, throwing a candy into her mouth and making a face as the sour taste hits her tongue.

“You like her,” she teases, and I sit back and wonder if that’s true.

When did that happen?

“I don’t know,” I admit, feeling lighter just talking about it. My sister takes my hand and smiles.

“Why don’t you talk to her and figure it out?”

God, she’s probably right, but now that it’s been a few days, how the hell do I approach her. Hey sorry, I pushed you away when you kissed me, can we talk? No thanks. Just as my sister opens her mouth to say something else, the doorbell rings, and Addi jumps up and runs to the door. The second the door opens, and I hear Kate’s voice, my whole body locks and I close my eyes.

“Hey Addison, is your brother here?” she asks in that voice that shouldn’t cause my heart to race but does.

“Yeah, he’s in the living room. Do you want to come in?”

“I don’t want to intrude on your night together…” Kate whispers and I smile, wondering how I missed the sweet side of her all these years.

“You’re not. I’m gonna go so you two can talk.”

There are some hushed words and I hear Addison tell Kate that she’s sorry to hear about her mom and my heart sinks once more. I can’t imagine what it’s like to watch the person you love most die in front of your eyes.

Before long, my sister has left and Kate is standing in the entryway to my living room, staring at me as I sit on the couch.
