“So, there's no way for me to save my pub on my own?” I ask, already knowing the answer.

“I’m sorry, Quinn, but the sale is pretty much final. I’m just waiting for him to come in and sign the papers.”

I know I need to take this as a sign that maybe I should be doing something else with my life, but the idea of not being in this place causes my heart to shatter into a million pieces.

“Can I ask you something, Brad?”

“Sure.” He sounds hesitant.

“I know you might not be able to answer this, but I need to ask anyway. Who bought the pub?”

A sinking feeling creeps up my spine at his hesitancy, and when he starts talking, everything I know starts to fall apart.

“I’m not supposed to say, but he told me he knows you. It was Wesley Hunt.”

I drop my phone to the floor, and at that moment, I know exactly what Wes wanted to talk to me about later. He wanted to tell me he was buying my pub...no not buying it, bought, as in he’s already done it without talking to me about it.

I don't waste any time. I leave my phone on the floor, forgotten as I make my way back into the bar. When I see Wes exactly where I left him, my steps falter. The reality of the situation comes rushing to the surface, and I can't stop the tears from falling down my cheeks.

Wes stands, seeing the tears, and makes his way to where I'm standing. When his hand shoots out to touch my face, I flinch away.

“What's going on, Angel? Tell me, and I'll fix it.”

A bitter laugh escapes as I roll my eyes and take another step back.“You’ll fix it? Like you wanted to fix this pub?”

He furrows his brow, confused.

“I just got off the phone with Brad from Western Bank.”

Wes’s eyes bug out, and his face turns white.

“Yeah. Seems he already has a buyer for the pub and told me no matter how much I pull in tonight, it won’t make a difference. I asked him to tell me who bought it and guess whose name he gave me?” My hands are on my hips, and I’m vaguely aware of Andy coming up behind me. I know she’s heard the whole thing and is waiting in the wings for the time being.

“Angel, I can explain—"

I hold up my hand and shake my head.“First of all, you have officially lost the right to call me anything but Quinn, and second of all, why the fuck would you do that?”

Andy holds the back of my shirt to stop me from lunging in his direction, which is exactly what I want to do right now.

“If we could go somewhere to talk, I can explain everything,” Wes pleads.

God, this hurts. The sunken feeling in my chest is expanding the longer I look into those green eyes of his.

I turn to Andy, whose gaze is full of pity.“Get him to leave, please,” I mutter before heading back toward my office.

Wes yells my name, and my heart breaks with each step I take away from him. I’ve not only lost my pub, my safe space, and my livelihood, but I’ve also just lost the man I thought could make me happy for the rest of my life.
