I grimace, knowing that that injury was probably months and months of recovery for him.“Shit, that sucks. I’m sorry.”

He shrugs like it wasn't one of the most life-altering events in his world.“I recovered and realized that I never actually wanted to play professionally. I was just following what my dad wanted. Don't get me wrong, I loved playing in high school, and it was amazing. But once it was taken away, I realized I missed my teammates more than the game itself, so I figured what happened must have happened for a reason.”

I nod, understanding where he's coming from.“So, what do you do now?” I ask, not knowing anything about his adult life since he got back into town.

“I own and operate my own security business.”

Huh, not what I was expecting.

“That look on your face is one I get often,” he chuckles “I love what I do and get to be my own boss, so that's a plus.”

I smile, loving the happiness I see in his eyes.

“Speaking of security, I overheard you and Andy talking about the singles night you wanted to have at the pub,” he says. “I was wondering if you needed any bouncers or security...because I know a guy who can get you a hell of a deal.”

I give him a sweet smile while shaking my head.“I can't afford it. I can barely afford the event itself, and I need to make as much money as possible over the next few months.” When he says nothing but gives me that questioning look, I sigh, leaning back and taking a breath. “I’m on the verge of losing the pub.”

His eyes bug out.“What? Why?”

I close my eyes and lean my head back toward the ceiling.

“I thought your uncle left it to you before he died?” he asks in confusion.

He's not wrong. He just doesn't know how much my uncle apparently hated me.“Well, he gave me a money pit that hasn't made a profit in years. I'm a month or two away from having to foreclose the business and figure out what I'm going to do next.”

Wes is silent for a moment as we both eat some food, and then he looks up at me with pity in his eyes.“What can I do?” he asks.

My heart melts a little at the offer. I would never accept anything from him, not for this, but the fact that he asked without any prompting is so sweet.“Nothing. No one can do anything. This singles night is my last chance at getting a little bit ahead.” I know in the back of my mind that this event will not save the business, but if I make enough money to show the bank that I can start to pay off the loan, then I might be able to buy myself some more time.

“What about investors? Can you ask someone to be a silent partner or something?”

I shake my head, hating that idea.“No, I don't want someone else to come and save me. This is my issue, and I will deal with it.”

“What happens if you can't come up with the money?” he asks as if I didn't just explain it. “I don't mean what will happen to the bar. That part is clear. I want to know what you’ll do if that happens.”

That’s a good question.“I haven't thought that far ahead yet. I might have to move back into my parents' place and find somewhere else to work. But I'll figure it out. It's not your concern.”

“That's where you're wrong, Angel. If this goes the way I plan, then you will definitely be my concern.”

I take a breath., realizing that Wes is in just as deep as I am, and I have no idea what to do with that information.
