“I know that look. We don’t have time for fucking. I have a dress fitting and you have another conference call in less than an hour.” She laughs.

I feel a pang in my chest. Fucking. Is that the way she sees our lovemaking? The wheels turn in my head, and it occurs to me that she doesn’t see that I’ve moved beyond the physical. I haven’t wooed her.

I chuckle at my thoughts. I sound like my mother. Although, it’s true. I haven’t shown Sidney how I feel. I haven’t removed the veil from the equation. I have to make it add up for her.

I moved the wedding up for selfish reasons. I don’t plan to let her go, but it’s time I show her what she truly means to me. It’s time I court my future wife.

“Don’t make any plans for tonight,” I say as inspiration hits.

She gives me a side-glance and a smirk. I lean in, taking her lips to show her with my mouth that I’m completely wrapped around her finger. I will have Sidney, all of her, when I’m done.

Chapter 37

Sweetest Thing

Sidney

When Clay said not to make plans, I didn’t think that meant we were getting on a plane to travel. He won’t tell me where we’re going. He’s been in such a good mood all day.

When he’s like this, it makes it harder and harder not to get sucked into him and his world. Clayton is a force when he’s still, when he turns on the charm and effort, he’s lethal. Tonight, that smile is threatening to take my life.

I sit nervously in my seat on the jet, having no idea why I’m so nervous. I’ve been with this man for going on five months. As that thought hits me, my stomach tightens. All of this should be ending in a month. Instead, our wedding date has been moved up and we’re getting married.

I still have reservations about moving forward with this. Clayton always treats the matter as if it’s business as usual. When I tried to talk him out of all this, he moved the wedding up as if changing terms in a deal to make it work. All business.

I’m still in shock. That was almost a month ago. I look down in my lap, thinking of Chloe’s words. Her situation is so much different from mine. Love may be patient, but you have to have love in order for it to be patient.

“A penny for your thoughts,” Clayton breathes in my ear.

I turn to look up at him. My eyes searching his. The smile falters from his lips. I go to lower my head, but he brings his hand up, pinching my chin between his fingers.

“Talk to me,” he commands gently.

“It’s nothing. Just thinking,” I reply.

“About?”

“My dress, the fitting, it’s been a long day.”

“Your dress has made you sad?” His brows draw in.

I shake my head, giving a weak smile. I don’t reply because I don’t know how to tell him my feelings. I don’t know if he wants to truly hear them. I’d rather not go into all this carrying that rejection. It’s best if I keep my mouth shut.

Clayton sighs, pecking my lips softly. He places his forehead to mine for a few moments. I take in his warmth and dream of a life where he returns the love I have for him.

“I have something for you,” he says, pulling away.

He reaches into the bag the stewardess placed at his feet not too long ago. Pulling out a box, he places it on my lap. The silver paper and blue ribbon taunt me to tear into it, but I’ve already taken so much from him.

“Open it, Sid,” he murmurs, dipping his head to kiss my neck.

Hesitantly, I unwrap the gift and open the lid. Once I have it open, I look into the box in confusion. Sitting in the box are two Kindle e-readers. Clayton reaches in, taking one out.

“One for you and one for me. I loaded the books from your wish list. We can read a few on the way and talk about them when we’re done,” he says with the biggest smile on his face.

He looks so proud of himself. It’s the most adorable and thoughtful thing he has ever done. This is the sexiest he has ever been to me.

“You’re going to read the books on my wish list?” I look down at the Kindle he’s turned on and see the titles already loaded. “The romance books on my wish list.”

“Why not?” He shrugs. “It’s something you love. I want to do it with you.”

“Who are you?” I blurt out.

He throws his head back and laughs. My heart squeezes. I didn’t think I could love him any more. This has taken my love for him to new levels.

“Come on, we should get started.” He winks at me.
