Everyone had tried to tell him. Liv and Lewis had mentioned he needed to find someone new. His own mother hated Lauren for years.

Why didn’t he listen? Why didn’t he move on?

He didn’t know why. But he was free now.

“Are you okay?” Violet asked him. He was surprised she even cared.

She was the one that got screwed over. Lauren had been cruel to her, and Violet had been thinking it was Charlie the whole time. Hurt like that didn’t fade overnight.

Anyways, if you want to save it, then delete it. Don’t submit it. Go be a teacher at some middle school because from what I see it’s all you’ll be good at.

Jesus. How could Lauren have ever said that?

“Charlie?” Violet repeated. “Are you okay?”

“S… sorry," Charlie said. “I’m thinking.”

“Hopefully not that you made a mistake by breaking up with her. Because that’s the best thing you’ve ever done.”

“I don’t think I’ve made a mistake. I feel free.”

“Oh," Violet said.

Charlie didn’t want to think how terrible it had truly been. He didn’t want to think of the many times Lauren had walked out on him, and the times he kept following her. How could he have been so stupid?

“Charlie, I’m sorry this happened to you," Violet said.

Charlie’s eyes flew to hers. “You’re apologizing?”

“Should I not?” Violet asked.

“You were the one who got screwed over.”

“Yeah, maybe in a way. But I didn’t date her. I imagine there was other stuff she did that was as bad. The whole relationship had to take a lot out of you.”

“It wasn’t all bad.” Charlie sighed. “Whenever we would fight, she would give me time and then come back by doing something nice, and it usually worked. But this time I blocked her number, and I plan on keeping it that way.”

“If she shows up here again, I can always run her over with my car.”

“She won’t," Charlie replied. “She hates this house.”

“What? Why? This is the coolest house I’ve ever seen.”

Charlie laughed softly. “Try telling her that.”

“I don’t plan on ever talking to her again," Violet said. “No offense, but she’s got the moral backbone of a gummy worm.”

“Wh- where did you get that analogy?”

Violet shrugged. “A student said it once.”

Charlie laughed, but it quickly died out as the memory of what happened played back in his mind.

“Thanks for sticking up to me," he said. “After everything that’s happened, I would have understood if you didn’t.”

“You don’t have to thank me. I’d do it even if I still hated you.”

“You don’t still hate me?” He asked, his throat feeling thick with emotion.
