“When was it changed?”

He scrolled up. The date read a few days later.

“These changes still show the same profile as you.”

“I don’t know. I mean… it was six years ago, but it had to be from my laptop then.” He tried to think back. “I remember reading your paper and then Lauren had asked me to borrow my laptop because it was a Mac and she needed it for a presentation. She said she wanted to look good. Then I got it back and sent the paper to you after you asked me about it.”

“So… Lauren did it.”

“I … I don’t know for sure.”

“It was either you or her.”

“I can’t tell if you she did it or not. I mean, I would hope not but … she’s never been your biggest fan.”

“I can tell.”

“She didn’t act suspicious at the time. We were fighting, but we made up after you and I started fighting. The only thing I remember her mentioning is you weren’t cut out for grad school.”

“How the fuck did she know about me going to grad school? Did you tell her?”

“I …” Fuck. Now that he thought about it, he hadn’t ever mentioned it to Lauren. He thought it had been common knowledge. “No, I didn’t.”

Violet stared him, eyes ablaze. He wasn’t sure if she was about to kill him or Lauren.

He tried to remember anything else, anything that would have explained it more.

“She’s always started everything with you. She’s at fault for all of this,” Lauren had said.

“I don’t get why she’s so obsessed with you.”

“She’s so weird. She’s got nothing going for her.”

“Charlie?” Violet asked, bringing him out of his thoughts. “So, you’re sticking with the fact it was Lauren?”

“Yes,” Charlie said, feeling everything shift around him. “It was her. It had to be her.”

Suddenly, Violet wasn’t the one going off on him that day, it was her retaliating on what she thought he’d said. But it had never been him.

And it shouldn’t have made sense because he didn’t want to believe Lauren was this cruel.

And yet, the evidence was in front of him.

“Fuck,” Charlie cursed. “Violet, I’m so sorry this got sent to you. This is wrong.”

Violet blinked at him, her face unsure. “You’re… sorry?”

“Of course I am.”

“You didn’t even send it.”

“I’m sorry you read it. I’m sorry my girlfriend was so insecure that she sent it to you.”

Violet stared at him for a long time.

“I … can’t believe this.”

“I know. I’m sorry it’s-“
