“Are there ever any fun ones?”

“Hm, the Winter festival is fun. It’s right at the beginning of the semester before burnout begins.”

“That’s coming up soon then.”

“It is. I somehow got roped into planning it, so that’s where the rest of my break is going.”

“Sounds fun.”

“It can be. As long as I can get the inflatables I usually do. It makes the kids look forward to coming back to school, so I think it’s great.”

“You like kids, don’t you?” Charlie asked, unable to help himself.

“I do, surprisingly. Don’t get me wrong, there are days I want to pull my hair out, but I do like teaching. It’s not a glamorous job. Or high paying.”

“Not everything has to be high paying.”

“In some ways it does. There are bills to pay. At least if you live in Nashville.”

Charlie knew she was right. She may have a passion for her job, but even he knew she had never been well off.

“Nashville has gotten expensive,” he told her. “I’d probably be priced out of my neighborhood if I didn’t inherit my house.”

“Really? Don’t you have a good job?”

“I do, but people keep moving here. Apartments are ridiculously high. I think Lewis says they pay almost three grand for theirs.”

“It’s literally a closet,” Violet said, shaking her head. “This city is too much. I mean don’t get me wrong, it’s nice but people who’ve lived here for years can barely stay.”

“If they raise my taxes one more time, I’m screwed.” And he was being honest too. Sure, he didn’t have a house note, but sooner or later he was going to be stuck with a big-ticket expense, and he didn’t have the savings for that.

“If my apartment doesn’t get fixed, I’m not sure what I’ll do.” Violet looked worried, as if it was a possibility for her apartment not to be repaired. “But I have a few weeks until I need to worry about it.”

“You guys good?”

Both Charlie and Violet jumped. Micah was standing on the dance floor, without Damon, looking at them both with a curious expression.

“Uh, yeah.” Violet said. “Why?”

“The bridal party got done a few minutes ago.” Micah crossed her arms. She didn’t look mad. She looked almost … smug. “Either you guys were having an actual conversation, or you were about to kill each other.”

Violet instantly stopped and stepped away from him. For some reason, he missed her warmth.

“It’s nothing.”

“Sure,” Micah said, but it didn’t sound like she believed them. “They’re about to cut the cake soon, so do you want to be in the photos for that?”

“Oh, yeah. Of course I do.”

“Plus, Liv needs to give you the key to her place.”

The reminder she would be leaving his house that night gave him all the more reason to try and work this out.

“I’ll see you later,” Violet said to Charlie. He nodded and watched her walk away.

From there, the wedding was a blur. Charlie was tasked with behind the scenes work to keep the wedding running, so he didn’t see much of Violet. He posed for lots of photos with Lewis, and he caught Violet doing the same, but he didn’t get to talk to her for the rest of the night.

All his tasks had been assigned away from Violet, so he didn’t get to see whether or not she had gotten Liv’s key, or if she was even in a decent mood.
