Violet wondered if Charlie would get it - if he would remember the paper that started all of this. Would he finally admit he was wrong? Would he finally say that maybe he had been way too harsh?

Charlie only shook his head. “I don’t know how to get you to trust me, so how about we make it even?”

“What does that mean?”

“You do things for me in exchange for staying here.”

“Things?” Violet asked. “Like … sex things?”

Violet would be lying if she said she hadn’t thought about it, but the last thing she wanted was to give him more ammunition by sleeping with him.

Charlie’s face turned dark red. “No! God. No, not that.”

“Then what?”

Charlie cleared his throat. “You want the score to be even, right? You want to hold some power over me?”

Violet wouldn’t put it in those words, but he was somewhat right.

When she didn’t disagree, Charlie sighed. “Fine. I need some help with things around the house.”

“What?” Violet asked.

“There’s some stuff I’m not good at doing. House stuff. You said you fixed up your apartment yourself?”

“Yeah, I did.”

“Then, I need a few things done. My bathroom has some issues, and some of the steps to the basement are loose. Can you fix it?”

“Um … yeah, I probably can.”

“Then do it. I need the help, and you need it to be even. So, we’ll make it even.”

It was a pretty good idea. She would feel less awful about her situation if she was doing something for Charlie instead of taking up space.

“Okay, I’ll take a look then.”

Charlie nodded, and then turned to look at the small cat. It had finished eating and was busy sniffing around the house. “I’ll take a day off work to deal with the cat.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I’m … not sure. Maybe a shelter. Maybe it can stay here. Just … give me a minute to think, Moore. I can’t do that when you’re around.” Charlie walked away then, and Violet was left staring.

The cat followed him downstairs, as if it knew its fate was tied to Charlie. Violet sighed. She should have handled that better, and she knew Charlie was both pissed about the cat and having to offer her something to make her feel better about staying at his house.

He was obviously protective over this place, and Violet didn’t even blame him. She would be too.

It did need work, though. The stairs he had mentioned had almost caused her to fall a few times and fixing it would take her less than an hour.

Charlie probably didn’t trust her to do it, so she wasn’t sure why he had offered it in the first place.

But she also was desperate to prove her worth, so she decided not to question it.

Charlie was losing his mind.
