“Are you in love with her?” Charlie asked, curiously.

“I am… yes," His mother said. “Is that okay?”

“Of course it’s okay … but when I was a kid, I thought I remembered you telling me that love falls apart, and it ends. Is that what you said?”

“Not entirely. Sometimes love ends, but not all the time. And with your father… it was never real love. More like duty. It didn’t end. It never started.”

“Did you know that then?”

“No," his mother said. “No, I didn’t. And I can see how you’d think I meant it, but when love is real, you know it, Charlie. And you fight for it. You choose it. It’s so different.”

“Violet said something like that.”

His mom smiled, “Violet, huh?”

“Mom… there’s something you should know about Violet.”

“What?”

“She’s the girl I fought with for six years.”

“The one you told me about at lunch? The … same one in your house?”

“Yes. I was the only one with room when she lost her apartment, so she came to stay with me.”

“You must have hated that.”

“I… Well, it was Violet. I couldn’t say no.”

“She seems special then.”

“She is. She’s always been a part of my life, whether we got along or not.”

“So then go for it,” his mother said. “Take the risk. It’s worth it.”

Charlie shook his head. “She might be moving. She has a good job opportunity across the country.” Charlie sighed. “I … I don’t know if she should take it. Lauren is the one that pulled strings to get her the job.”

“I wasn’t aware Lauren liked to help people.”

“She’s not. She’s doing it to get Violet out of the picture, but this job opportunity gives Violet a chance to be more independent, to finally make enough money to live. She lost her apartment and had to start over, so I get why she’s considering it.”

“But you don’t want her to go.”

“What would you do in this situation, mom?”

“Charlie, what I would do is so different than what you would be willing to. For my love I’d … I’d follow her anywhere.”

Charlie blinked. “You’d move? With her? Just like that?”

“I love her. I love her more than material possessions. She is my happiness. Now, she would never ask me to move, but I’d do it. I’d do it in a heartbeat.”

“Even if I was here?”

“Oh, honey. I could fly back. I could call you on the phone. These days the world doesn’t end because someone is across the country, but we only get one life, and we have to live it. I don’t know your situation with Violet. I don’t know if you feel the same deep love that-“

“But mom, I do.” Charlie looked at his mom. “I do love her, and if I didn’t have Gigi Ruth’s house, I’d move.”

His mother paused; lips pursed. “You don’t have to keep the house, you know. Not if it comes between you and someone you love.”
