Page 161 of To Make Matters Worse

Violet read about Lauren’s cases, how she went for the highest bid, and how she had recently won a case of a dog attacking a child.

She was on the dog’s side.

Is this the kind of help she wanted? Is this the future she wanted? To be like her mother and take jobs that took her soul?

Violet waited for Charlie to leave before she walked out the door. She didn’t go to work. Instead, she went downtown to the office Lauren worked at. She needed to see her, to be reminded of how terrible she truly was.

It was a high rise, but Violet doubted Lauren would settle for anything else. She was at the top of the building as a part of the law firm she owned. It should have been intimidating, but Violet was too focused to care.

Lauren’s assistant glared when Violet approached. “Do you have an appointment?” She asked in a nasally, irritated voice.

“I’m Violet Moore. Lauren knows me.”

“I seriously doubt that. She’s busy and doesn’t have time for-“

“She’s gonna make time," Violet said.

“Ah, Violet,” another familiar voice said. Violet felt herself tense as she turned. Lauren looked as beautiful and perfect as ever, but Violet tried not to care. Underneath that was nothing but spite. “What a surprise. Come in.” The assistant turned red in the face. Violet gave her a fake smile before following Lauren.

Lauren sat as a huge glass desk that overlooked the city. It was far too showy and probably way too expensive. It matched her personality perfectly.

“You told someone about me for a job.”

“In Phoenix, right?” Lauren said, looking at her nails. “Probably hard to live with Charlie if you’re all the way out there.”

“So that’s why you’re doing this? To get me away from Charlie?”

“And out of the goodness of my heart," Lauren added. Violet rolled her eyes. “Come on, even I know teachers don’t get paid jack shit. You do deserve more.”

“But more meaning I be across the country?”

“Hm. Maybe.”

“Why? Why do all of this?”

“Can I not do something for charity?”

“No, you can’t. Everything has a reason with you.”

Lauren stared and then leaned forward in her chair. “I don’t owe you an explanation.”

“No, you don’t, but I figure you want to make it hurt as much as possible. You let Lindsey tell me you recommended me. You want me to know what you’re doing.”

“Smart, as always… Violet. That’s the thing about you. Charlie loves smart girls, but he also loves nice ones.”

“I know you want me away from Charlie, but am I worth all of this?”

“Let’s just say you and are alike in one way. You want to have money, and I can offer you that.”

“How the hell would you know that?”

“Nancy Moore has a lot to say about you.”

Violet laughed. “You found my mother? Seriously?”

“Charlie is mine, Violet. So yes, I will look into whoever is taking him away from me.”

“But you’ve been at this for years! It started in college when we were only friends.”
