“Apparently you weren’t alone. You don’t have to worry. He’s gone.”

Charlie nodded. At least one problem was solved.

“Hey,” Lewis said. “Liv is calling me, probably to talk about dinner. I’ll talk to you later?”

“Yeah, man,” Charlie said. He told Lewis his goodbyes and hung up the phone. Once he did, he figured he could check his notifications while he was at it.

He paused when he saw a LinkedIn notification. It had been years since Charlie had looked for a job, but he kept the app up to date just in case he was ever laid off. It was pretty common in the tech world.

Charlie checked the notification and immediately saw the last person he wanted to see.

Lauren had invited him to connect.

Charlie glanced at her profile. He didn’t even feel anything for her sharp features or red hair. He only felt pissed she was even reaching out to him. So, he immediately blocked her on LinkedIn too. He wondered if there were any more apps she could try.

But why would she try now? Why would she even try to connect on LinkedIn? She had been leaving him alone for weeks.

Charlie shook his head and packed up his laptop to leave. He didn’t need to be thinking about his ex, not when he had things going on with Violet.

He drove home, still perplexed and feeling a little guilty. Would Violet be mad if she found out Lauren contacted him? Had he done something to somehow invite this into his life?

He pulled into the house, only to go and sit on the couch. Violet luckily pulled up not long after he did.

"How did it go?" Charlie her the moment she walked in.

“Hello to you too,” she said as she took her coat off. She leaned down to pet Roo as she always did after walking through the front door.

“Sorry, I guess I’m a little nervous for you.” And for himself.

“It’s okay. I think I did well. The manager was a little off putting though. She was so … professional. Almost too professional.”

Charlie nodded. "Do you think you would work with her?"

Please say no.

Violet shrugged. "I can work with anyone."

Well, she wasn't wrong about that. When Violet put her mind to it, she had even made it work with Charlie while she still hated him.

"But will you like it?"

Violet stared out of the window, eyes dull. She then sighed. "There's something else I found out today. Something big."

"Okay," Charlie said. "Hit me with it."

Violet looked at him fully.

"Lauren recommended me for the job."

Chapter Twenty-One

Violet

Charlie’s demeanor changed quickly.

“What?” He asked, his voice hard.

“I found out in the interview that Lauren recommended me for the job.”
