He leaned down, putting his forehead on her shoulder as if exhausted. Violet didn’t disagree with him.

“I need a shower," Charlie muttered. “I should probably go do that.”

Violet paused, trying not to let panic set in. Charlie had technically gotten what he wanted. Now he could easily make fun of her, or worse, dump her and say they were going to be friends. Violet desperately wanted to hope Charlie wasn’t that kind of guy, but experience made her wary.

“Hey, why are you tensing up?” Charlie said. She blinked back into awareness to see him looking at her worriedly.

“Nothing," she said. In the back of her mind, she wondered how fast she could escape once he was in the shower. Maybe she could hide in her room forever and pretend this never happened.

“No. None of that," Charlie said softly. He kissed her cheek gently, and he caressed her cheek. “Did I do something wrong? Did you not like it?”

“No!” Violet exclaimed. “God, nothing like that. You … you slept with me.”

“Yeah?” Charlie said. “Was that okay?”

“Yes, of course," she said softly. “But this is when people usually leave.”

Charlie looked bewildered. “Why would I leave?”

“You got what you wanted.”

“That’s not all I wanted," Charlie said. “I want to shower with you, and have you sleep here tonight, so I can wake up with you next to me in the morning. This was great, but there’s so much more too.”

Violet felt her cheeks grow hot. “I … I want all of that too, but I’m worried you’ll change your mind.”

“Then let me show you I won’t leave," Charlie said. “Come on. Come shower with me.”

“You sure?” She asked.

“I wouldn’t offer if I wasn’t. Do you want to join me?”

Violet could only nod and follow him.

She had never showered with someone, but it was a ridiculous and amazing as she imagined. Charlie’s bathroom was warm and comfortable. He offered to shampoo her hair, and it felt like one of the most intimate moments in her life.

After the shower, Charlie lit the fireplace in his room and gently guided Violet to his bed. She blushed, wondering when his attention would fade, but she was happy to share a warm bed with him. Besides, she had always wanted to experience his fireplace.

Violet was pillowed on his firm shoulder, her leg slung over his. She didn’t have a lot of experience sleeping in the same bed as someone, but his body was so warm in the cold night she couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. For what felt like a long time, they both laid in his bed, feeling the warmth of each other’s body. Then, Violet drifted off into the safe embrace of sleep, cocooned in Charlie’s arms.

Chapter Nineteen

Charlie

When going back on promises, one should feel regret.

Charlie didn’t feel it at all, which was odd - considering he was doing the exact opposite of what he told his best friend he would do.

He had never been the kind of guy to let lust cloud his vision. He always tried to think clearly, and he had never understood why people lost their heads over something so primal.

But now he understood.

The connection combined with their understanding of one another intensified every touch, every kiss, every moment to make their night … perfect. He had never come so hard in his life, and he was worried if this didn’t work out, and he had to find someone else, it would never be like this again.

Charlie and Lauren were together for many years, and while he had enjoyed some of it, there was nothing like that. The woman he fought with for six years shouldn’t have held a candle to the woman he had been with since high school, but being with Violet was like the sun, not a candle. And he couldn’t look away, even if he got burned.

He didn’t know what the future held. Violet could wake up and tell him she didn’t want to do this again, and they needed to stay friends. Maybe she was the one with sense, and she could tell him they needed to wait before they tried anything else.

But Charlie knew it would never be him.
