Page 135 of To Make Matters Worse

“This is awkward, right?” Violet said, turning around.

Charlie blew out a breath. “Yeah, it is.”

“What do we do? Do we distance ourselves?”

Charlie knew instantly he was not doing that.

“No… no, I think it would make it worse if we did. You remember what happened when we fought and distanced ourselves?”

“Yeah. Everything was concentrated.”

“Yes, if we face it, then it’ll fade. Feelings usually do.”

Violet nodded, and then turned to go into the kitchen. She paused as she went to leave, and then turned back to him, biting her lip.

“Would it be easier to get it out of our systems?”

Charlie stared at her. Was she suggesting what he thought she was? His entire body wanted to say yes.

And he was about to, but then she shook her head.

“No, it’s not realistic.”

“Probably not.” Charlie said, though it pained him too.

Violet sighed. “Then what do we do?”

Charlie closed his eyes, but then what Violet had suggested played behind his eyelids. Just for one night he could kiss her and touch her the way he wanted to. What would that feel like?

Heat rushed through him.

“You know what? I need to get dressed for work,” Violet said.

The idea was fresh in his mind, so that was to blame for what he did next.

He grabbed her gently by the arm, stopping her as she went past him.

“Listen, if this doesn’t fade… then maybe we should look at hypotheticals.”

Violet turned a gorgeous shade of pink, and she nodded absently. Her eyes flickered to his lips for one split second, and then was out of his sight and going upstairs.

She left without another word, and Charlie had to stand there for a moment and collect his muddled thoughts. Then he cleaned up the table and left for his own job.

His workday went terribly. He was horny and distracted. And when he left work, he knew he would have to ride in the car with her, be close to her, and suffer through this painful awkwardness once more.

Violet was getting ready when he got home from work. This was their first time seeing many of their friends since the wedding, and he could tell she was nervous about it. He could only hope it went well enough to alleviate their fears.

He changed into a dress shirt and nicer jeans, he met Violet in the living room, and couldn’t help but stare.

Her hair was wavy and down. She had on a light touch of makeup. Her cheeks glistened, and her lips were slightly pink. With that, she had on the damn Emerald green dress from the rehearsal. But this time, his eyes lingered on her. And he didn’t want to tear them away.

“Are you ready to go?” She turned to face him. Her face was carefully guarded, but her cheeks turned slightly red, and he had to avert his eyes.

“Yeah, I’m ready.”

He was not. At least not emotionally.

They got there with the party in full swing. Micah’s new apartment was huge and spacious. It must have cost her a fortune, but she had a great job, so she could afford it.
