“Is it that out of character?”

“… No.” Violet shook her head, annoyed she was figured out so easily. “The only explanation I have is that a lot of stuff went right at the right time to make it work.”

Violet glanced over where Lewis and Charlie had gone off to talk and found them finally heading back to the table. Liv followed her line of sight.

“Just know, the next time it’s the two of us, I need all the details.” Her voice was almost menacing.

Lewis got back to the table first, and he still looked nervous. “So, what did we miss?”

“Nothing much. Just about how I act when people help me.”

“You mean how you completely disregard all of your own personality and try to be extremely quiet?” Charlie asked.

“Yes, exactly.”

“Wow,” Liv said. “You got it right first try.”

“Yeah, but it’s not a big deal. We have a decent arrangement.”

Violet glanced over at Lewis and found him looking between them nervously. Lewis looked tense after his and Charlie’s discussion, and Charlie himself didn’t look easygoing, either.

“Maybe we should head out,” Charlie suggested. “It’s getting busy, and people are waiting.”

Lewis looked at Charlie, and Violet wondered what they had talked about.

“Yeah, let’s get out of here before it gets too busy,” she agreed. The sooner they left, the sooner she could ask Charlie what was going on.

They made quick work of their remaining food and paid their checks. They parted with Liv and Lewis outside. By the time their friends were out of sight, the exhaustion hit hard.

The car ride was silent, and Violet noticed Charlie hadn’t said much since he had talked with Lewis. Maybe his conversation hadn’t gone well.

“Did you and Lewis have a good talk?” Violet asked.

“It was … a talk.”

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine. Just Lewis asking questions.”

“Hard ones?”

Charlie nodded.

“What was it about?”

Charlie didn’t answer, and in the darkness of the night, she couldn’t get a read on him.

“You don’t have to tell me," Violet added, though her curiosity was through the roof.

Charlie sighed. “It’s awkward.”

“Was it about me?”

“Yeah," Charlie said.

“What … what did you guys say?”

“Nothing bad,” Charlie rushed to say.
