Chapter One:

Violet

Contrary to popular belief, Violet didn’t intend to be the one at the engagement party to have a drink thrown on her.

Things just happened.

The engagement party was in full swing. The venue was filled with people - some Violet knew, others she didn’t. It was after seven, which was when the party was supposed to begin.

And he was late.

Violet took another sip of her drink. This wasn’t like him.

But she wasn’t worried.

She was hopeful.

The thing was - this was the best-case scenario. She wanted a good night. If he came then it wasn’t going to be good. It was going to end in bloodbath.

And since this was her best friend’s engagement party, bloodbath was not the goal.

Violet turned to the bride-to-be, who was in the center of the occupied room. Her curly hair was piled onto her head into a gorgeous bun, and her brown skin was shimmering against the soft light.

Liv was going to be a gorgeous bride. Her skin glowed, her smile dazzled, and it wasn’t even the big day.

Her fiancé, Lewis, looked just as happy. His light, curly hair was styled today, sitting a bit more organized than usual. He was wearing a white button-down shirt to match Liv’s form fitting white dress, and his hand hadn’t left hers all night. They looked perfect.

“You look amazing!” Violet said the moment Liv saw her. She pulled her friend into a tight hug.

“Thank you!” Liv said. “I can’t believe any of this is real.”

“You’re perfect together,” Violet reminded them. “So, I can. I can’t wait to help with the wedding.”

Violet wouldn’t be sleeping over the next few weeks to get everything done, but she would manage.

“Are you sure you’re not too busy?” Liv asked. “I know you’ve got your job to deal with…”

And she did. Violet’s job as a middle school teacher barely paid her bills and took up all of her time, but she loved it – just like she loved Liv. She would make it work.

“Your family is spread out across the country,” Violet replied. “I know how hard it was getting them here for the party, and they have to fly back in for the wedding. I can help - I promise.”

“Are you sure?” Liv asked.

“Of course I am,” Violet replied.

Liv smiled and hugged Violet again, obviously grateful. These moments were worth the stress.

When Liv pulled away, she glanced at her fiancé, who was looking at his phone with a frown. Violet instantly knew who he was texting, and by the nervous look on Liv’s face, she knew too.

“Come on. Let’s go get something to drink,” Liv said, her voice tight.

“I have something,” Violet replied, showing her friend the half-full cup she had.

“Well then … you need another.”

“It’s fine,” Lewis said, putting his phone away. “We want Violet to be able to drive home, right?”

Violet wanted to ask what was going on, and she knew who it was about.
