Don’t be delusional.

Pretending to be with me was the easiest way to get him out of this situation.

“I thought she’d never leave,” Callen whispers before planting a gentle kiss on my neck, just below my ear.

My eyes drift shut as I lean my head back onto his shoulder, taking everything in.

“Thanks for helping me ward her off. She wouldn’t take the hint.”

Tears pool in my eyes, but I swipe them away. I knew what this was when I got into it. I shouldn’t have ever let my heart get involved. Men like Callen don’t end up with girls like me. It’s a proven fact.

“Well, thanks for the tour today. I need to get going before it gets too late, and I can’t find my way back to my hotel.”

I move to climb off his lap, but Callen’s arm tightens around my waist, holding me in place.

“You promised me dinner in exchange for the tour.” He flashes me another one of his panty-dropping smiles before sliding me off his lap and threading his fingers through mine.

“I did, but I never said when,” I grumble as he pulls me down the street, stopping directly in front of a vintage Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

“Hope you don’t mind riding on the back of my bike.” He smiles, handing me a helmet.

“Hell yeah! I’ve always wanted to ride on one of these. My grandpa said my dad loved Harleys before he died and always dreamed of owning one.”

“I’m sorry about your dad,” he whispers, pulling the helmet from my arms and placing it on top of my head.

I drop my chin to my chest, not wanting to see the look of sympathy in his eyes. “Thanks. At least he and my mom went together. They were in a car accident, rushing to make it home in time for the science fair at my school. It was winter, and they slid across a patch of black ice.”

Callen lifts my chin and stares into my eyes. “It wasn’t your fault, you know.”

My eyes widen in shock as the tears I desperately tried to hold at bay run down my cheeks.

It took me years before I told my three best friends about what happened to my parents. But this man got it all out of me in five minutes. Not only that, but he also picked up on the guilt I’ve felt ever since that day. How I’ve gone to sleep almost every night since wondering if they hadn’t been rushing for me, if things would have turned out differently.

“I’ve never told anyone that before. Well, someone I just met.”

His hand moves from my chin to my cheek, and his thumb brushes the tears away.

“What kind of Jedi mind tricks are you playing on me?”

“No tricks, Ava. Just two hearts recognizing their other half.” He flashes me another smile, turning my brain to goo once again.

I swear his smile will be the death of me, and he knows it.

“You don’t need to lay it on so thick. I already said I’d go to dinner with you.”

I silently curse at myself, realizing what I just said. Callen doesn’t seem like the type of man to back down from a challenge, and I just laid down one.

“What if I want more than just dinner?” he questions as I step back, but he quickly follows.

We continue this game of cat and mouse until my back hits the wall behind me.

“What do you want?” My breath hitches in my throat, desperately wanting him to lean down and kiss me, but my stubbornness wins out. I tilt my chin up in defiance, realizing too late that I’ve played right into his hands.

Callen leans down so our lips are just a hair’s breadth away from each other.

“Everything,” he whispers before capturing my mouth with his.

Our lips mold together in sync as if we’ve done this a million times. His tongue gently caresses my lips as he grips the back of my neck, pulling me tighter into his chest, eliciting a loud moan of pleasure from me. He plunges his tongue into my mouth as if he’s trying to devour me whole. Fire burns in my veins as I wrap my arms around his neck, pulling him closer to my body. All these feelings are foreign to me, but I know in my heart that I want—no, Ineed—more.
