“Sky, is there something you need to tell me? Are you in some sort of danger? Are you trying to say that Kingpin is holding you here against your will?”

“No, it's nothing like that,” I said, although it kind of was.

Penelope seemed too serious and professional. I didn’t want to alarm her.

“It's just that we broke up. He doesn't want me to leave. For my own safety.”

“That's bullshit. You should be able to leave at any time you want. Who the fuck does he think he is?”

“I agree. But I think he thinks he’s the boss here.”

I was about to suggest she go get him so he could take me to the ER, but she proposed an alternative.

“I'm willing to take you to the ER. And if you want to leave from there, that's your choice. I am not beholden to these bikers. I agreed to take care of Pagan’s sister, but I am not one of them.”

I wanted to go to the ER since the nurse said I should. That was for certain. But she said she’d look the other way if I wanted to leave. I had a choice to make. But worrying about the health of the baby, I couldn't decide. Clearly there was still something between Kingpin and I. And if I had more time, maybe he’d forgive me. Maybe not.

But regardless, I was definitely going to go to the ER.

“Yeah, I think I should go get this checked out. Make sure the baby is okay.” I agreed to her taking me.

“Pack a bag. You never know when they want to keep you overnight for this sort of thing. Should we let Kingpin know?”

“What do you think?”

“That's up to you, Sky. It's your choice.”

“Let's not. I don't know if I can deal with him right now.”

The most important thing was finding out if the baby was okay. After that, I would decide if I would come back to Royal Road or not. I packed an overnight bag and left with Penelope. And it was easy. Nobody was watching me. Apparently, Kingpin didn't think I would actually leave.

When we reached the guard shack, Penelope said, “Put your head down.”

I did it automatically without even thinking, I obeyed her words. She pulled a blanket over me and said goodbye to Cricket who was working the gate.

“In case you decide not to come back,” Penelope explained.

I popped up right away and looked back at Royal Road.

When her car almost immediately left the highway for a dirt road, I knew I was in danger. Before I could contemplate jumping out, if I even could, she stopped the car.

“Honey, I'm sorry,” she said.

As somebody else opened my door, I was immediately struck.

All I saw was the blood.

Chapter 22

Kingpin

For two weeks I'd gone to bed alone. Every single fucking night. And jerked off, thinking about Sky, mainly. Because she kept coming to Royal Road, showing her ass. If she hadn't been, maybe I would’ve fallen back into my old ways of enjoying all the women the clubhouse had to offer.

Maybe I would’ve thought of finding Eve again. As it was, I avoided her like the goddamn plague. I had to. Before long she’d be back at the Eagle’s Nest with Hallow anyhow. Confused, I couldn’t think about Eve.

I thought of Sky and what I could’ve had with her if she hadn’t ruined things. And every time she shook her ass out in the clubhouse, flirting with the other bikers, I had to stick up for myself. Sky was making a fool of me again. If she wasn't pregnant, I’d throw her out.

“Are you done punishing her yet?” Opry asked me.
