Bubba hung up. Goose pimples rose all over my skin. It's not just that the man, my father, made my skin crawl. The thought of him dying, it really happening, something I've wished for over and over, didn't sit right with me. I expected to be overjoyed. A weight to lift. Something. As much as I hated the old man, tears welled up in my eyes.

They weren’t tears of joy.

Fuck.

I never got emotional. I blamed Sky and all her bullshit. Maybe the drugs last night. Pinching the bridge of my nose, I tried to make the tears stop. I made a decision. I’d go watch the motherfucker die. Maybe seeing it with my own eyes would satisfy me.

But I wouldn't go alone. I’d not been thinking clearly lately. I let myself get played by a young woman. I let a twenty-three-year trap me in a marriage. I let essentially a young girl lie to me. Fool me, the President of the Royal Bastards MC. And I’d gone alone, thinking I was going to meet Noah Fond. That’d been the most stupid.

Passing the Big House, I made my way to Goliath's place. Went right through his door.

“Hey buddy, we gotta go,” I called.

The gigantic guy came out into the living room. He was in nothing but his underwear, tighty-whities.

I tried not to look.

“Get dressed. We've gotta head out.”

“Where to Prez?” Goliath’s pants were on his couch. He started dressing.

I paced in his living room. “Bubba called. Says my dad’s dying. Wants me to meet him at the hospital. Fuck, I didn’t ask him which one.”

Getting my phone, I texted Bubba, asking for the address.

“And you're going.” Goliath sounded as surprised as I was at the fact.

“It's all I've ever wanted. I've got to see it with my own eyes.”

Just then Junebug popped her head around the corner.

“Congrats, Kingpin.” She wasn’t congratulating me on my marriage but on my dad’s death.

“Junebug? You’re staying here with Goliath.”

“What's it to you?”

Goliath's face let me know, he knew exactly what I was thinking.

“Brother, I'm sorry.” Still holding my phone, I texted Leviathan. “911 at Goliaths.”

I slipped my phone in my pocket in case I needed to fight my Enforcer.

“Kingpin, Getty’s playing with you. No one is defecting. Junebug’s just staying here a spell. Right, Junebug?”

“Staying here getting close to my most trusted Enforcer. I wonder why.”

Junebug spoke up. “Kingpin, you're not the only man around here. Plus, since when do you care who I sleep with?”

That confirmed she was fucking with Goliath. As in trying to play him. The one man out of many, I never had to worry about. Junebug and the others didn’t know, but I did. Goliath was gay. Or Bi. Whatever. But I’d known since forever, he didn’t develop feelings for the women he fucked. Only the men.

“Prez, I would never betray you,” he said.

I was hard-pressed to believe him but still. What was he up to?

“None of that matters, Goliath. You know more than anybody what has to be done. I can't have my Enforcer keeping secrets from me. Defecting or not, you're going to have to answer to the club.”

Leviathan was at the door in the next instant. He brought a crew with him, including Riff and any of the other brothers who were awake at this ungodly hour.
