Leonora must’ve noticed, too.

She mumbled, “Looks like the honeymoon’s over, girl.”

Pushing against the bar to propel myself up, I ran to catch up with him. Snatching a hold of his vest before he made it out the door, I stopped him.

Surprised, he spun and raised his fist in the air.

Covering my face, I ducked.

“Oh, it’s you.”

He lowered his arm.

“Yeah, your wife. Remember me?”

“Sky, love. I’m not really back yet,” he said as if that explained everything.

“You’re in a hurry.” So much, he about punched me. I crossed my arms. “Where are you off to now?”

Kingpin glanced around at the crowd.

“I’m just on my way out.”

“Where to?” I tried again.

Kingpin took my arm and guided me out the door.

On the other side of it, he asked, “What’s gotten into you?”

“Nothing. Where are you off to?”

His face grew hard.

“It’s club business.”

“What happened with Eve? Where was she? Did she just run off like people are saying?”

“I can’t say.”

“You keeping secrets for her?”

“Listen, I have somewhere to be.”

“You’re supposed to be in bed with me.”

“That’s why I’m in a hurry, love. So, I can get back. To you. My Ol’ Lady.”

Kingpin stroked my arms. “I don’t have time to explain.” He wobbled his head. “I won’t explain. Being married to me means you won’t always know where I am or what I’m doing. You have to be okay with that if this is going to work.”

“Going to work?” I strained the words.

He softened. “I didn’t mean it that way. If you must know, I’m going to find Hallow now that Eve’s back.”

“Why? Can’t you call him?”

“It’s not that simple. I promised Eve, I’d let him know she’s back.”

He promised her? He promised me something, too.
