I was about to give up and go back to the Big House to wait for Kingpin when one of the best parts of being at Royal Road walked my way. My cousin Leonora who worked here sat beside me at the bar. Thankfully, she was still completely clothed.

“What’s poppin’, Queen Bee,” she greeted me.

“That’s new.”

“I was trying it out. Doesn’t quite work. But you need a nickname, stat. You’re about the only girl around here that doesn’t have one.”

“What’s yours?”

“You know, Leo, as always because I’m fierce. You get any marital dick yet. Did Kingpin take his beef bus into tuna town?”

I’d texted her earlier and filled her in on Kingpin being gone.

“No.”

“Well. I don’t know if I’ve even said a congrats. Good job making payday with that punani.”

I hit her with my elbow. “Come on, Leo. I’m in love.”

“Are you? Is this about Luke?”

Leo was talking about my boyfriend that killed himself a couple of years ago. I’d never gotten over it. Depression uprooted my life way before my stepdad left my mom, and we came to Nashville. Numb, I had left college and started making bad life choices. Kingpin had started as one of those choices but turned into something so much more.

Something better for me.

“No. But Kingpin helps me forget about him.”

The biker made me forget about all my troubles, so much I felt almost healed.

“Is that a good thing?”

“Love, Leo. Love has replaced my sorrow. It’s fucking fantastic.”

“Still. It’s all so sudden.”

“So?”

“Sorry sis, it’s just I’m busting my ass trying to make ends meet with my muff. You married into a literal goldmine.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Fixin’ finances with the fuzzbox. Making bank with the Ol’ bacon hole. Stacking loot with the stanky coot.”

Sputtering a laugh, I shook my head.

“I had no intention to do any of that.”

“Didn’t you? You were working for Ralph and now look at you.”

“But it’s not like that.”

“I’ve gotten close to Opry, ya know. He’s been creaming my cock pocket.”

“Ewww.”

“He does the books. Kingpin’s loaded.”

Duh. I didn’t care about that.
