I lifted my chin, and for some stupid reason, I wanted to yell checkmate inher face because we both knew that having Kincaid Black in your corner meant something. “Kincaid was kind enough to help me pack,” I replied coolly.

“Itwas just a joke,” Laney spat. “Get a fucking sense of humor, Rylee.”

“Ha. Ha,” I deadpanned.

“Well, you’regoing to have to get over it eventually, Rylee. We’re all in this together.”

I hated the words that I was about to say next, but it wasn’t like she wasn’t going to find out anyways. “No, we’re not, Laney,” I replied. “Stone broke off the engagement, and he cancelled our contract. So, you can just go fuck yourself.”

For thefirst time since the night of the initiation, Laney looked unsure of herself. “He…he did?”

Ibarked out a cold laugh. “Isn’t that what you wanted? For him to call off the engagement, so you could make a play for him?” I didn’t let her answer. “Well, you win, Laney. You got your chance. Have at it, and I wish you both all the happiness in the world.”

“Rylee, honey-”

I turned towards Kincaid. “Don’t you see, Kincaid? It doesn’t matter if sheends up with him or not, because I don’t care if she does. If you ask me, this entire thing was just one big joke, and I don’t find it funny anymore.”

“Let’s go,” she quickly said, trying to save me from any further humiliation in front of Laney. “You’re right. The rest of it is just white noise.” I gave her a grateful nod, and we both turned to head for the front door.

“You’re seriously moving out?” Laney called from behind us.

I didn’t bother turning around when I said, “I meant what I said, Laney. Come near meagain and I will break your fucking face.” I slammed the door behind me on that final statement, and I followed Kincaid to the elevators.

Once inside, I willed myself not to cry. I’d done enough of that tonight. Again, I had to prioritize, and that was find a place to stay until I could find a room to rent for the rest of the year.

Or maybe…maybe I’d just call my parents and see if I could transfer schools.

Chapter 27

Stone~

Nothing got solved.

We went over everything twice before we all realizedthat we weren’t going to come up with an immediate solution at three in the fucking morning with no sleep. Ross and Fox ended up leaving to go back home and get some sleep, promising to regroup later, while Saxton and I had stayed behind.

“Look,Stone,” he said once the other guys had left. “I know we’re not close, but I’m here if you need me. But…I gotta be honest with you.”

“Yeah?”

“Rylee’s got Kincaid in her corner, and that doesn’t bode well for you, dude.”

I eyed him. “You can’t get Kincaid to back down?” Iwasn’t sure what their relationship was, but he picked her, and no matter the reason, she’d said yes to him. He had also chosen her back when we were freshman, so there was more history there than there was with the rest of us.

“Yeah,” he drawled out. “I’ll get righton that.”

“So, then, what are you saying, Voss?”

“Just that-” His phone chimed with an incoming text, and he quickly pulled out his phone to check it. I didn’t blame him, though. A text at nearly three in the morning had to be an emergency.

When he lookedover at me, dread settled at the bottom of my spine. “What is it?”

“Kincaid sent me a video with a message to show it to you guys,” he said. “Let me forward it to Ross and Fox, and then we can watch it.” I waited impatiently as his finger worked his phone. When he was done forwarding it to the guys, he held is phone out, so we could both watch the video.

The clip started with the video at an odd angle, trying to capture both Rylee and Laney from behind a wall or something. Laney’s voice kicked off the beginning of the video. The jealousy in her voice was unmistakable as I heard her asking if I can take a joke or not. And as more of the video played, the more I understood why Saxton believed I wouldn’t be able to fix this.

The worst part was hearing Laney say that anyone who knew Rylee would know those texts weren’t real. Anyone who knew her would know she’d never do such a thing. Or at least, I thought that had been the worst part. The worst part came towards the end of the video when Rylee told Kincaid that she didn’t care if Laney ended up with me.

That sliced my chest wide open.
