“Wouldn’t it make sense?”Jayce was onto something big.“We may have been oblivious because none of us were on the playing field of power, but many of the high leaders across the supernatural hierarchy were secretly aware of Willow’s royal status. I’m unsure how her sister played a role, but what if a few individuals knew Ruby Phoenix’s spot as heir was temporary or a decoy? Even if you don’t focus on Willow’s royal status, her path was made so that she’d be an outcast. It was in line with the stars for her to be awakened late because she’s from the Pink Moon lineage. Certainly, the Coven knew this because they were once close allies with the Phoenix Royal Family.”

But something changed in their dynamic.

“Greed, obviously,”Jayce acknowledged.“The Phoenix family may have aided the Valentines to make their foundation, but you can’t possibly discount the possibility of them not wanting to be ‘under’ or ‘in debt to’ the Phoenix family anymore.”

With how they’ve been acting, they’ve surely been proving they wish to be on their own feet.

“Which is proving to fail miserably,”Jayce noted, but he was silent for a long moment.

What?

“I know one of the theories we have is Willow’s death making her some type of weapon, but why does it seem like throughout Willow’s upbringing, they’ve been desperate to make her and Aurelia enemies?”

The question was indeed a good one, and I couldn’t help but join the moment of silence as we tried to figure out the relevance.

We’d come to the conclusion that the Phoenix and Valentine families had an alliance for many centuries. It was thanks to the Phoenix family that the witches not only found stable ground at a time of culling and destruction of their own magic kind, but with their financial and power backing, they were able to rise into their own unit.

Despite the leadership being ruled by one family tree, it was obvious they’d forgotten their roots with the intention of overpowering the very people who helped them survive. Regardless, to try to become enemies unprovoked was suspicious.

Do you believe it’s due to their brief dating period?

“Potentially, but it was only a year. As much as we enjoy carrying grudges as shifters, that’s not something worthy of making the Phoenix royal family their enemy.”

Pureblood ranks and conflicts are rather different than typical shifter royalty. The best person to ask about these things would be Milo.

“I agree,”Jayce solemnly answered.“Maybe Viktor would know something too. He’s still recalling his memories from the ritual revolving around the time he served Willow and knew she was royalty. Maybe he even knows more about Willow’s magic potential and why it would be favorable for the Vile Queen.”

You have a good point. Milo shouldn’t be asleep for much longer it seems.

I could feel his energy beginning to spike, which meant he was going to wake up soon.

“Do you want us to come by?”Jayce offered.“I’m almost done collecting all the footage from the cathedral. Also, I just contacted Viktor to check the coordinates of the Coven site. With your phone tapped, I’m sure whoever was enjoying the conversation is swiftly moving to get rid of those lingering tracks.”

You don’t sound in the least bit concerned.

“If they fall for the bait, it narrows it down to the Coven or the Vile Queen. I think it's become more obvious that they’re separate organizations now, but they were once allies in a sense. They probably want no evidence of that previous connection, especially when it's becoming more apparent that the Coven is about to fall, just like the Vatican, who’s suffering immensely from our punishment.”

You’re really confident right now.

“You noticed?”

Is it because of the chaos happening?

“Kinda. Inferno wolves do have an association with the beings of hell and the havoc bestowed upon these lands that ignite chaos. Since Saint lost the reins and went haywire, I’ve felt a tremendous boost. Not sure. I’m definitely more focused, even though this time of year is hard on me.”

Willow misses you.

I had to remind him that his need for solitude was perfectly fine, but with how big our pack was getting, he needed to make an effort to spend more time with Willow or she’d question their relationship.

“I miss Rebel Flower more than she realizes,”Jayce confessed, though his voice even within my mental walls was barely audible.“I hope she knows it's not intentional. I also get that I should no longer let the past dictate my current relationships. I’m…trying, trust me. Honestly…I just need an opportunity to be myself with her. You know, be in an environment where we’re just living our lives. Training with Willow was appeasing in many areas, even when Onyx joined in, but I do wish to be more selfish. I really want to have some alone time with her.”

Do you want me to make you an opportunity?

That was my job as Alpha after all. It was obvious it bothered him that he couldn’t easily instigate a moment with Willow that only revolved around them—with good reasoning—so it was my turn to help out.

“You have a lot on your plate, Dimitris.”He didn’t hide his worry.“You’re pushing yourself.”

That’s sometimes what an Alpha needs to do to ensure his pack survives.
