He didn’t look the slightest bit scared which ticked me off because I didn’t understand why Willow wasn’t seeing what I was witnessing.
This contradicting, psychotic mess of a wolf who probably has daddy issues or something suited for Lucifer’s son.
“Then you can kiss me.” She gave him permission, to which he simply pressed his forehead against hers. The move was clearly unexpected.
“Arthur?”
“I’ll reserve it for later,” he whispered and pulled away. “I need to get back if I want to finish the outfits.”
“Arthur, you really think you can do this?” Willow’s apprehension was all over her face as she sat up while Arthur took a few steps forward but stopped to look back at her.
“I have to, Willow,” he stressed as his eyes narrowed in seriousness. “This is like a battlefield, and we’re surrounded by everyone who wishes for us to fail. Haven’t you come too far to face defeat?”
“You have a point…but…,” she trailed off.
Arthur walked back to her and lightly tapped her nose.
“This is the moment they wish to see you crack from the pressure,” he revealed as his eyes went emotionless. “They whisper words of mockery in the hallways and hope that everything will go wrong so you won’t obtain what’s rightfully yours. You know what that reminds me of?”
She shook her head as her eyes were locked onto his red ones.
“My past. I had the right to be free. To live a childhood that would give me the chance to embrace my inner child until my innocence slowly dimmed away while my level of responsibility grew with each passing year of my life. Instead, it was stolen out of jealousy. Ripped from my grasp by those who whispered in anticipation of the day I’d be sold like fish ready to be taken to the market.” He looked away as he shrugged. “Our Sweet Domino doesn’t deserve such agony. I may not know everything, but from the years of watching the Vile Queen’s obsession over you, I’m sure you’ve gone through shit no one deserves to experience.”
He stretched his arms before he rolled his shoulders a few times.
“I’ll finish on time and you’ll have twenty minutes to change and get makeup in order, but you will walk down that runway today, Willow. I can promise you that.”
“Why are you willing to push yourself when she was once your enemy?” I dared to ask the question because I didn’t completely understand his motive.
“Like I said from the very beginning,” Arthur began and gave me his full attention. “I like gambles, and my master is my golden ticket to remaining free from the deadly hands of the Vile Queen.”
“Liar,” Willow muttered under her breath, which made Arthur burst into laughter before he walked to the door. Glancing back one more time, I noticed that his eyes twinkled with merriment.
“Between you and me, Sweet Domino, it’s because my new mission is to win your heart.” He then pointed at me. “And make him completely uncomfortable with my undying love for you.”
With another manic wave of laughter, he was out the door.
“Son of a—” I began but was interrupted by Willow as she asked, “Are you actually annoyed by him?”
“He grinds all my gears with his existence.”
“That has to be an overprotective reaction, huh?” Willow concluded as she rose off her chair to stretch. “Maybe I’m just overthinking but you and Onyx have been acting odd.”
“Huh?” I actually stared at her as she blinked and stared back at me. “I’m not acting odd.”
“Right.” She dismissed my attempt to brush away the conversation I’d very much like to avoid. “You’re lacking confidence. Why?”
Fuck…Do we have to talk about this now?
"We don’t have to talk about this now,” she countered, which made my eyes widen for a moment while it was her turn to give me a taunting smirk.
“Told you,” she said with pride. “You’re slipping.”
All I did was grumble under my breath about how I would beat Arthur up somehow. I’d get Onyx to join me if he was up for it.
“Don’t go trying to beat Arthur up,” Willow declared and headed to the washroom.
“How are you reading me like an open book?” I inquired because it was annoying me.
